Electoral District Of Gosford
Gosford is an electoral district of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly in Australia. The electorate covers the western parts of the City of Gosford, including central Gosford and Woy Woy. It is represented by Liesl Tesch of the Labor Party, elected at the 2017 by-election. The electorate was created in 1950. At the redistribution prior to the 2007 election much of the district of Gosford, then held by Chris Hartcher for the Liberal Party, became part of the district of Terrigal while Gosford absorbed most of the former district of Peats, then held by Marie Andrews for the Labor Party. Antony Green describes the redistribution as effectively being that Gosford was renamed Terrigal while Peats was renamed Gosford. Liesl Tesch
Liesl Dorothy Tesch AM (born 17 May 1969) is an Australian wheelchair basketball player, sailor, and politician. She is a Labor Party member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly, representing Gosford since the 2017 Gosford state by-election. Tesch became an incomplete paraplegic after a mountain bike accident at the age of 19. She competed in her national wheelchair basketball team at five paralympics, winning three medals, and was the first woman to play the sport professionally. She took up sailing in 2010, winning gold medals at the 2012 London and 2016 Rio Paralympics with partner Daniel Fitzgibbon. Early life Tesch was born in Brisbane on 17 May 1969. Chris Hartcher
Christopher "Chris" Peter Hartcher (born 21 December 1946) is an Australian politician. He was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1988 to 2015, representing the electorates of Gosford (1988–2007) and Terrigal (2007–2015). He represented the Liberal Party for most of his career, serving as its deputy state leader from 2002 to 2003, and in the O'Farrell Ministry as Minister for Resources and Energy, Special Minister of State and Minister for the Central Coast. In 2013, he resigned to sit as an independent following his implication in an ongoing Independent Commission Against Corruption inquiry, and retired at the 2015 state election. Brian McGowan (Australian Politician)
Brian McGowan (23 September 1935 – 8 March 1994) was an Australian politician who was elected as a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly. Brian McGowan was born in the Sydney suburb of Stanmore, New South Wales, Stanmore. He left school at 14 and worked as an office boy, telephone technician, tram conductor, and professional fireman. After training at Wagga Wagga, New South Wales, Wagga Wagga Teachers College, McGowan worked at Tocumwal Primary School, Shepardstown Small School in 1961, Nowra High School, and was promoted to The Entrance High School to take up the position of English and History Master. 1973 New South Wales State Election
Elections for the New South Wales Legislative Assembly were held in the state of New South Wales, Australia, on Saturday 17 November 1973. The result was a win for the Liberal- Country Party coalition under Sir Robert Askin, which had been in office since 1965. As of 2019, this was the last time the Coalition won a fourth-term in New South Wales. Issues The Legislative Assembly had been enlarged by three members to 99 adding the seats of Woronora, Penrith and Ku-ring-gai. The election was held just eleven months after the Liberal/Country coalition lost the federal election after 23 years in power. Malcolm Brooks
Malcolm Harold Brooks (16 June 1930 – 19 June 2020) was an Australian politician who served as member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for the district of Gosford from 1973 to 1976 and as Shire President and Mayor of the City of Gosford. A member of the Liberal Party, Brooks was a councillor on Gosford Council from 1971. In 1973 he was elected Member for Gosford but lost the following election to Labor candidate Brian McGowan by 70 votes. Brooks re-entered local government at the following election and was a Councillor, Shire President and City Mayor through to his unsuccessful re-election attempt as an independent councillor in the 2008 New South Wales Local Government Elections. Elections for the New South Wales Legislative Assembly were held in the state of New South Wales, Australia, on Saturday 13 February 1971. Keith O'Connell
Keith O'Connell (24 November 1923 — 28 November 2006) was an Australian politician. He was a Labor member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1971 to 1984, representing Gosford until 1973 and Peats thereafter. O'Connell was born in East Greta and attended government schools at Morisset East and Newcastle before becoming an electrical fitter. In 1952 he became a storekeeper at Toukley. He was elected to Wyong Shire Council in 1959, where he served until 1971. He was chairman of Brisbane Water County Council from 1960 to 1971 and a member of the local government electricity association from 1960 to 1971, becoming President in his last year. The 1965 New South Wales state election was held on 1 May 1965. It was conducted in single member constituencies with compulsory preferential voting and was held on boundaries created at a 1961 redistribution. The election was for all of the 94 seats in the Legislative Assembly. Issues In May 1965, Labor had been in power for 24 years and 56-year-old Jack Renshaw, who had been seen as a generational change for the party leadership, had been premier for one year. Yet Renshaw had difficulty adjusting to a televised campaign; and his manner, the result of spending much of his early life in remote New South Wales, had limited appeal to urban voters. The 1950 New South Wales state election was held on 17 June 1950. It was conducted in single member constituencies with compulsory preferential voting and was held on boundaries created at a 1949 redistribution. The election was for all of the 94 seats in the Legislative Assembly, which was an increase of 4 seats since the previous election. At the time of the election, Labor had been in power for 9 years, Jim McGirr had been the Premier for 3 years and Labor had lost power federally to the Liberal Party of Robert Menzies 6 months earlier.
