Burrup Peninsula
Murujuga, formerly known as Dampier Island and today usually known as the Burrup Peninsula, is in the Dampier Archipelago, in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, containing the town of Dampier. 1996 Western Australian State Election
Elections were held in the state of Western Australia on 14 December 1996 to elect all 57 members to the Legislative Assembly and all 34 members to the Legislative Council. The Liberal–National coalition government, led by Premier Richard Court, won a second term in office against the Labor Party, led by Opposition Leader Dr Geoff Gallop since 15 October 1996. The election resulted in the Liberals winning an outright majority for the first time in Western Australia's history. Although Court did not need the support of the Nationals, the coalition was retained. Meanwhile, Labor attracted its lowest share of the primary vote since 1901. Fred Riebeling
Fredrick Riebeling (born 29 January 1953) is an Australian politician. He was a Labor member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly from 1992 to 2008. Riebeling was born in Bridgetown. Before becoming a member of parliament, he was a Roebourne shire president. He represented the electorate of Ashburton until it was abolished in 1994 and became part of the electorate of Burrup, which itself was later abolished in a redistribution in 2003 and became part of the electorate of North West Coastal. Riebeling was appointed as the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly in 2001. He is married to Colleen Riebling and has three sons. Riebeling retired shortly before the 2008 election and Vince Catania, the son of Balcatta MP Nick Catania, won preselection for the vacant seat and retained the seat for the Labor Party. Wittenoom, Western Australia
Wittenoom is a declared contaminated site and former townsite north-north-east of Perth, in the Hamersley Range in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The declared contaminated site comprises , making it the "largest contaminated site in the southern hemisphere". The area around Wittenoom was mainly pastoral until the 1930s when mining for blue asbestos began in the area. By 1939, major mining began in Yampire Gorge, which was subsequently closed in 1943 when mining began in Wittenoom Gorge. In 1947 a company town was built, and during the 1950s it was the Pilbara's largest town. The peak population, as recorded by the Australian census conducted on 30 June 1961, was 881 (601 males and 280 females). During the 1950s and early 1960s Wittenoom was Australia's only supplier of blue asbestos.
