Mary Electa Allen
Mary Electa Allen (1858–1941) was an American photographer and co-founder of the Deerfield Society of Blue and White Needlework. She worked alongside her sister as a photographer from 1885 until 1920 capturing the life and landscape of Historic Deerfield, Old Deerfield, among other subjects and paid commissions. Her work was critical for the Deerfield Arts and Crafts movement which began in the late 19th century. She captured the life and work of the artists and Artisan, craftspeople, wrote extensively about the movement's progress, and illustrated their work through photographs in magazine articles. Early life and education Allen was one of four children born in Deerfield, Massachusetts, to Josiah Allen, a prosperous farmer, and his wife Mary. Electa Arenal, born as Elena Electa Arenal y Huerta, (May 16, 1935 – June 12, 1969) was a Mexican artist, known best as a muralist painter, and sculptor. Early life and education Elena Electa Arenal y Huerta was born on May 16, 1935, in Mexico City, Mexico into a Mexican Communist Party family, artist Elena Huerta Muzquiz and Luis Leopoldo Arenal. Her sister Sandra Arenal Huerta, was a known activist, feminist and writer. Her mother was part of the Taller de Gráfica Popular (English: "People's Graphic Workshop") and was within the Mexican artistic circle of the twentieth century. As a child she lived between 1941 and 1945 (during a portion of World War II) in the Soviet Union, along with her mother and sister, due to political reasons. Electa S. "Exy" Johnson (August 17, 1909 – November 9, 2004) was an American author, lecturer, adventurer, and sail training pioneer. Throughout her life she completed many sailing feats including sailing around the world seven times while training younger sailors. Early life Electa "Exy" Johnson was born in Rochester, New York on August 17, 1909. She attended Smith College and then University of California, Berkeley. Exy Johnson's sailing experience started after her years in college when she boarded a schooner set to sail around France. Exy Johnson was fluent in French and German, and also had the ability to communicate in other languages. Electa Amanda Wright Johnson (, Wright; November 13, 1838 – January 17, 1929) was an American philanthropist. She was one of the founders of the Wisconsin Industrial School for Girls, and was selected by the governor of Wisconsin several times to represent the state on the questions of charity and reform. Johnson wrote essays, short stories, and sketches of travel for the daily papers of Milwaukee. Electa Quinney ( Mahican name: Wuh-weh-wee-nee-meew Quan-au-kaunt) (1798 – 1885) was a Mohican and member of the Stockbridge-Munsee Community. She founded one of the first schools in what would become Wisconsin and was the first woman to teach in a public school in the territory which would be Wisconsin. Early life Electa Quinney was born around 1798 in Clinton, New York, into the Housatonic or Stockbridge tribe. She was schooled at a Quaker school on Long Island, New York, where she spent four years, and in Clinton at the Clinton Female Seminary, which opened in 1814. Later she studied for six years at the women's seminary in Cornwall, Connecticut. She was the sister of John Wannuaucon Quinney who led her tribe west when they relocated from New York to the Menominee lands. Electa Nobles Lincoln Walton (née Electa Nobles Lincoln; 12 May 1824 – 1908) was an American educator, lecturer, writer, and suffragist from the U.S. state of New York. Though she was co-author of a series of arithmetic books, the publishers decided that her name should be withheld. She became an advocate for the enfranchisement of women. She was said to be the "first woman to administer a state normal school". She was an officer of the Massachusetts Woman Suffrage Association, an active member and director in the New England Women's Educational Club of Boston, and president of the West Newton Woman's Educational Club since its organization in 1880.
