Stone & Thomas
Stone & Thomas was a United States chain of department stores. Based in Wheeling, West Virginia, the chain had stores located in West Virginia, Virginia, Kentucky, and Ohio. The company was bought out in 1998 by Elder-Beerman, an Ohio-based chain of department stores. History Stone and Thomas was founded in 1847 in Wheeling, Virginia by Elijah J. Stone and Jacob C. Thomas. Also referred to as Stone's or "The People's Store", it was a West Virginia institution for 150 years. From its flagship store in downtown Wheeling, it expanded into Huntington in the 1910s, Charleston in 1928, and in most of West Virginia's major cities. In 1956 Stone and Thomas bought out Broida's of Parkersburg, and for a short time it was called Broida's, Stone & Thomas. Meis, also known as Meis of Illiana, was a department store based in Terre Haute, Indiana, United States. Existing from 1928 to 1989, the chain operated 11 stores at its peak. At the time it was sold to Elder-Beerman there were 10 stores. The Plaza North store in Terre Haute had already closed. History Lucien Meis and Salo Levite founded the Meis department store in downtown Terre Haute, Indiana, in 1928. This store remained open until the late 1970s. Meis also operated other stores in Terre Haute at Honey Creek Mall, Plaza North, and The Meadows. The chain also operated a jeans store called The Bottom Half. Both of these businesses were sold to Brown Shoe Company (now Caleres) in 1972. Mabley & Carew
Mabley & Carew was a prominent department store in Cincinnati, Ohio. History The store traced its roots to 1877, when Detroit merchants C. R. Mabley and Joseph T. Carew, en route to Memphis, were stranded in Cincinnati by a late train and wound up going into business in the heart of what was then a booming river city. Having missed their connection, they walked around town and reached Fountain Square, saw a "For Rent" sign, and decided that was a fine place for a store. Mabley & Carew was the first store in Cincinnati to adopt full-page newspaper ads, to give elaborate Christmas performances, and to set up the Arbor Day custom. The Mabley & Carew building was once illuminated by 10,000 lights that glimmered opposite Fountain Square. Reibold Building
The Reibold Building in Dayton, Ohio was the area's tallest building from the time of its completion in 1896 until 1904 (when the first part of the Centre City Building, then known as the United Brethren Building, was completed). The Reibold building was named for the developer, Louis Napoleon Reibold, and housed The Elder & Johnston Department store (now Elder-Beerman) and offices. It was constructed in three phases: the center section in 1896, the South annex in 1904, and the North annex in 1914.
