Eldena Bear Don’t Walk
Eldena Bear Don't Walk (born ) is an American lawyer, judge and politician. She is an enrolled citizen of the Crow Tribe of Montana and was the first woman to serve as the Chief Justice of that tribal court. She is also a descendant of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes. She has served as a judge for several other Tribal sovereignty in the United States#Tribal courts, Tribal Courts. She is the chair of the Indian Law section of the State Bar of Montana. She ran in the United States elections, 2018#Legislative elections, 2018 election cycle as a Democratic Party (United States), Democrat for an open seat in District 93 in Montana House of Representatives which is in the Mission Valley and includes part of the Flathead Indian Reservation. Her father was Urban Bear Don't Walk, who was one of the first Native American lawyers graduating from the Alexander Blewett III School of Law, University of Montana School of Law in 1975. The Crow, whose autonym is Apsáalooke (), also spelled Absaroka, are Native Americans living primarily in southern Montana. Today, the Crow people have a federally recognized tribe, the Crow Tribe of Montana, with an Indian reservation located in the south-central part of the state. Crow Indians are a Plains tribe, who speak the Crow language, part of the Missouri River Valley branch of Siouan languages. Of the 14,000 enrolled tribal members, an estimated 3,000 spoke the Crow language in 2007. During the expansion into the West, the Crow Nation was allied with the United States against its neighbors and rivals, the Sioux and Cheyenne. In historical times, the Crow lived in the Yellowstone River valley, which extends from present-day Wyoming, through Montana and into North Dakota, where it joins the Missouri River.
