Elcano Royal Institute
The Elcano Royal Institute for International and Strategic Studies (Spanish: ''Real Instituto Elcano de Estudios Internacionales y Estratégicos''; RIE) is a think tank based in Madrid, Spain. It was created on 26 November 2001 as private foundation, formed by the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Economy, Defence and Education, Culture and Sport as well as the public railway company RENFE, also receiving the additional funding from PRISA, CASA, CEPSA, SEAT, Indra Sistemas, the SGAE; Telefónica and Zeltia. Think Tank
A think tank, or policy institute, is a research institute that performs research and advocacy concerning topics such as social policy, political strategy, economics, military, technology, and culture. Most think tanks are non-governmental organizations, but some are semi-autonomous agencies within government or are associated with particular political parties, businesses or the military. Think-tank funding often includes a combination of donations from very wealthy people and those not so wealthy, with many also accepting government grants. Think tanks publish articles and studies, and even draft legislation on particular matters of policy or society. Zeltia
Zeltia is a former Spanish pharmaceutical company which operated through a variety of subsidiaries in the pharmaceutical and chemical industries. As of 2007, Zeltia's research activities in the pharmaceutical area had not resulted in a marketed product. However, the company's majority shareholder and chairman are the same person, which has relieved the pressure which many CEOs have experienced to produce immediate returns. Charles Tito Powell CMG (born 1960) is a Spanish-British historian who studied History and Modern Languages at the University of Oxford. His D. Phil. thesis was on Spain's transition to democracy. He was a Junior Research Fellow at St Antony's College, Oxford, a lecturer in History at Corpus Christi College, Oxford, and an J. A. Pye Research Fellow at University College, Oxford. On moving to Spain in 1997, he was appointed deputy director of the Ortega y Gasset Foundation's Centro Español de Relaciones Internacionales (CERI). In 2002 he joined the recently created Elcano Royal Institute, Spain's leading international relations think-tank, of which he is currently Director. Gustavo Suárez Pertierra (born 1949) is a Spanish jurist and politician. He served as Minister of Education and as Minister of Defence during the governments of Felipe González. Biography Born on 27 February 1949 in Cudillero. He earned a PhD in Law at the University of Valladolid. He lectured in canon law at the University of Oviedo and the University of Valladolid, later holding the Chair of Canon Law at the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM). He briefly served as President of the University Socialist Grouping (ASU) in the 1980s.
