El Sopar
''El Sopar'' ( en, Dinner) is a 1974 documentary film, in Catalan language, Catalan and Spanish, by experimental filmmaker Pere Portabella. The film takes place on the night of the execution of militant anarchist Salvador Puig Antich by Francisco Franco, Franco's Spanish State. Using simple cinematic conventions, Portabella's documentary involves five former political prisoners gathered in a farmhouse to prepare dinner and discuss the problems with long prison terms. To protect the film's subjects from persecution by in Francoist Spain, the film's production was coordinated in secrecy, with notices of the secret shooting location sent to technicians and participants at staggered times. After Franco’s death, Portabella recut his film and added an interview with Puig Antich’s lawyer. In 2018, he added a new intertitle that refers to the Catalan pro-independence politicians currently in jail. Pere Portabella i Ràfols (; born in 1927) is a Spanish politician, director, and producer. In 1977, he was elected Senator in Spain's first democratic elections and participated in the writing of the Spanish Constitution. As a filmmaker, his style is experimental, reaching new aspects of film language, often with a poetic tone and social content. Portabella is hailed as an iconic figure in Spanish film. Film career Raised among the great Catalan industrial bourgeoisie, Portabella moved at an early age to study chemistry in Madrid. There he met artists such as Joan Ponç, Antoni Tàpies and students at the Escuela Oficial de Cine (EOC), including Carlos Saura and Julio Diamante.
