El Pino (The Pine Tree)
El Pino ( en, The Pine Tree) is a large bunya pine located on the southeastern corner of Folsom Street and N. Indiana Street in East Los Angeles, California. The tree overlooks the Wellington Heights neighborhood of East Los Angeles and the Boyle Heights neighborhood of the city of Los Angeles from atop a small hill. History The tree, a mature bunya pine, grows on the former property of Dr. Okuno, a Japanese dentist and intern in a World War II concentration camp. Following release, Dr. Okuno received the land as a gift from an Anglo lady with whom his wife worked. There he rebuilt his business and amassed a huge library. After retiring, he took long strolls around East Los Angeles, greeting everyone and amusing the children with storytelling. Dr. Okuno is listed in the California Who's Who. Old Survivor
Old Survivor, also known as the Grandfather Tree, is the last remaining old-growth coastal redwood of the redwood forest that once populated the Oakland Hills in California. Description Old Survivor has a unique shaggy appearance with several large branches drooping outward from its sparse upper crown. The tree is much taller than the surrounding trees, all of which are second growth. Despite its name, the tree, which dates to 1549–1554, is actually young for an old-growth coastal redwood, many of which live between 1200 and 1800 years old or more. Between 7-12 years before Old Survivor was seeded, Spanish/Portuguese explorer Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo had led the first expedition to explore the coast of what is now California. The Encino Oak Tree, also known as the Lang Oak, was a 1,000-year-old California live oak tree, ''Quercus agrifolia'', in the Encino, Los Angeles, California, Encino section of Los Angeles, California. Taylor Hackford
Taylor Edwin Hackford (born December 31, 1944) is an American film director and former president of the Directors Guild of America. He won the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film for ''Teenage Father'' (1979).
