''El Mercenario'' ( en, italic=yes, The Mercenary) is a science fiction comics series by the Spanish people, Spanish artist Vicente Segrelles, published beginning in 1980. An unusual feature for a comic book, every panel is painted in Oil painting, oil, a time-consuming technique. The series is known for the great attention paid to the depiction of landscapes. Publication history The series was initially serialized, beginning in 1980, in the journal ''Cimoc'', before moving on, beginning in 1982, to be published as a collection of 13 albums, with at least 11 having been translated into English (primarily by NBM Publishing, NBM). Beginning 1998, Segrelles began using the computer to illustrate most of his comics. The 10th edition of ''The Mercenary'', ''Giants'', was the first to include pages designed entirely by computer. Vicente Segrelles
Vicente Segrelles (born 9 September 1940 in Barcelona) is a Spanish comic book artist and writer. Segrelles gained popularity in Europe for his painted comic book epic ''The Mercenary'' ('' El Mercenario''), started in 1980. Set in a medieval fantasy world, ''El Mercenario'' follows the adventures of a mercenary in his fight against evil. Unusual for the craft of comic books, every panel of his work for this series—which has reached 14 issues so far—is painted in oil, a time-consuming process. Oil painting is the process of painting with pigments with a medium of drying oil as the binder. It has been the most common technique for artistic painting on wood panel or canvas for several centuries, spreading from Europe to the rest of the world. The advantages of oil for painting images include "greater flexibility, richer and denser colour, the use of layers, and a wider range from light to dark". Mercenary
A mercenary, sometimes also known as a soldier of fortune or hired gun, is a private individual, particularly a soldier, that joins a military conflict for personal profit, is otherwise an outsider to the conflict, and is not a member of any other official military. Mercenaries fight for money or other forms of payment rather than for political interests. Beginning in the 20th century, mercenaries have increasingly come to be seen as less entitled to protections by rules of war than non-mercenaries. The Geneva Conventions declare that mercenaries are not recognized as legitimate combatants and do not have to be granted the same legal protections as captured service personnel of the armed forces. Heroic Fantasy
Heroic fantasy is a subgenre of fantasy in which events occur in a world where magic is prevalent and modern technology is nonexistent. The setting may be entirely fictitious in nature or based upon Earth with some additions.
