Ekiga
Ekiga (formerly called GnomeMeeting) is a VoIP and video conferencing application for GNOME and Microsoft Windows. It is distributed as free software under the terms of the GNU GPL-2.0-or-later. It was the default VoIP client in Ubuntu until October 2009, when it was replaced by Empathy. Ekiga supports both the SIP and H.323 (based on OPAL) protocols and is fully interoperable with any other SIP compliant application and with Microsoft NetMeeting. It supports many high-quality audio and video codecs. Ekiga was initially written by Damien Sandras in order to graduate from the University of Louvain (UCLouvain). It is currently developed by a community-based team led by Sandras. The logo was designed based on his concept by Andreas Kwiatkowski. Ekiga.net was also a free and private SIP registrar, which enabled its members to originate and terminate (receive) calls from and to each other directly over the Internet. Damien Sandras
Damien Sandras is known in the free software community due to his work on GNOME, more specifically on Ekiga, the leading Open Source softphone for the Linux desktop. He is one of the founders of FOSDEM, an event dedicated to free software developers in Europe. FOSDEM was initially created by Raphaël Bauduin under the name OSDEM. Sandras joined Bauduin and helped him setting up the event. Sandras was one of the driving forces behind the organization during 7 years. Ekiga was supported by the Free Software Foundation and more specifically by Richard Stallman as an alternative to the proprietary Skype. Stallman's e-mail signature contained a mention to the softphone during a few years: Sandras is a graduate of the University of Louvain (UCLouvain). NetMeeting
Microsoft NetMeeting is a discontinued VoIP and multi-point videoconferencing client included in many versions of Microsoft Windows (from Windows 95 OSR2 to Windows Vista). It uses the H.323 protocol for videoconferencing, and is interoperable with OpenH323-based clients such as Ekiga, OpenH323, and Internet Locator Service (ILS) as reflector. It also uses a slightly modified version of the T.120 Protocol for whiteboarding, application sharing (or by extension, desktop sharing), and file transfers. History NetMeeting was released on May 29, 1996, originally bundled with Internet Explorer 3, and later with Internet Explorer 4. Open Phone Abstraction Library
In the field of VoIP networking, the Open Phone Abstraction Library (OPAL) continues the open-source openh323 project to support a wide range of commonly used protocols used to send voice, video and fax data over IP networks rather than being tied to the H.323 protocol. Initially, from 2007, OPAL supported the H.323 and Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) protocols, but it has grown to include Asterisk IAX2. About OPAL implements a wide range of Voice over IP (VoIP) protocols for voice, video and fax data over IP networks. It is written in C++ and released under the Mozilla Public Licence. OPAL utilises the PTLib portable library that allows OPAL to run on a variety of platforms including Unix/Linux/BSD, MacOSX, Windows, Windows mobile and embedded systems. Empathy (software)
Empathy is an instant messaging (IM) and voice over IP (VoIP) client which supports text, voice, video, file transfers, and inter-application communication over various IM communication protocols. Empathy was created by forking the Gossip project started by Michael Hallendal, Richard Hult and later maintained by Martyn Russell. It was forked because there were disagreements amongst contributors about the backend at the time. It was initially completely XMPP based (similar to Google Talk and Facebook's chat implementations), but others wanted it to use the Telepathy stack. This led to the forking and new name Empathy. Empathy also provides a collection of reusable graphical user interface widgets for developing instant messaging clients for the GNOME desktop. Video4linux
Video4Linux (V4L for short) is a collection of device drivers and an API for supporting realtime video capture on Linux systems. It supports many USB webcams, TV tuners, and related devices, standardizing their output, so programmers can easily add video support to their applications. Video4Linux is responsible for creating V4L2 device nodes aka a device file (/dev/videoX, /dev/vbiX and /dev/radioX) and tracking data from these nodes. The device node creation is handled by V4L device drivers using the video_device struct (v4l2-dev.h) and it can either be allocated dynamically or embedded in another larger struct. A contact list is a collection of User (computing), screen names. Open Sound System
The Open Sound System (OSS) is an interface for making and capturing sound in Unix and Unix-like operating systems. It is based on standard Unix devices system calls (i.e. POSIX read, write, ioctl, etc.).
