Einar Arnórsson
Einar Arnórsson (24 February 1880 – 29 March 1955) was an Icelandic politician, lawyer and law professor. He was the minister for Iceland from 4 May 1915 to 4 January 1917. Biography Einar was born in Minna-Mosfell in Grímsnes to Arnór Jónsson and Guðrún Þorgilsdóttir. He graduated in law from the University of Copenhagen in 1906. He was elected to Althingi and sat there in 1914–1919 and 1931–1932 for the Independence party. He was Minister of Education and Justice in Björn Þórðarson's cabinet from 1942 to 1944. He was professor of law at the University of Iceland from 1911 to 1915 and again after leaving office as Minister for Iceland from 1917 to 1922. He was a Supreme Court Judge in 1932–1942 and again in 1944–1945. He was Rector of the University of Iceland in 1918–1919 and 1929–1930. For a short time he was father-in-law to Halldór Laxness. Minister For Iceland
Minister for Iceland ( da, Minister for Island, ; is, Ráðherra Íslands) was a post in the Danish cabinet for Icelandic affairs. History The post was established on 5 January 1874 as, according to the Constitution of Iceland, the executive power rested in the King of Denmark through the Danish cabinet. The Constitutional Act of Iceland of 3 October 1903 stated that the Minister for Iceland had to be a resident of Reykjavík and be able to read and write Icelandic. The minister was responsible to the Icelandic parliament. The post of Minister for Iceland was part of the post of Justice Minister of Denmark until 1904 when Iceland obtained extended home rule. After an agreement with the Social Liberal government in Copenhagen in January 1917, Jón Magnússon formed the first coalition government consisting of three ministers and with a majority in the Althing behind it. Supreme Court Of Iceland
The Supreme Court of Iceland (, lit. ''Highest Court of Iceland'') is the final court of appeal in the judiciary of Iceland. It is also the oldest of the current courts of law in Iceland and the highest of the three Icelandic court branches, the others being the District Courts of Iceland and the Court of Appeal (Landsréttur). Notwithstanding the Court not being mentioned by name in the Constitution of Iceland, but only its justices, it is validated in the Courts Act No. 50/2016. The Supreme Court of Iceland is located at the Dómhúsið (Courthouse) at Arnarhóll in Reykjavík, a building that was specially built for that purpose and that came into use in 1996. ''Tíminn'' () was an Icelandic daily newspaper founded in 1917. It had close ties with the Icelandic Progressive Party but after years of financial difficulties, the party severed all ties with the paper in 1993. It merged with the newspaper ''Dagur'' in 1996, becoming ''Dagur-Tíminn''. Its last edition came out on 28 August 1996. :'' Þjóðviljinn was also the name of a magazine published by Skúli Thoroddsen between 1887 and 1915.'' ''Þjóðviljinn'' () was an Icelandic daily newspaper founded on 31 October 1936. It had close ties with the Communist Party of Iceland and later its successors, the People's Unity Party – Socialist Party and the People's Alliance Party. During the occupation of Iceland in World War II, the editors of the paper, Einar Olgeirsson and Sigfús Sigurhjartarson, and journalist Sigurð Guðmundsson were arrested, accused of spreading propaganda against the British army, and moved to HM Prison Brixton in the United Kingdom for a duration of a few months. The publication of the paper was also banned for a year. In January 1992, the paper ceased publication due to financial difficulties.
