The Eighth Texas Legislature met from November 7, 1859 to April 9, 1861 in its regular session, a first called session, and an adjourned session. Edward Clark (governor)
Edward Clark (April 1, 1815May 4, 1880) was the eighth Governor of Texas. His term coincided with the beginning of the American Civil War. Early life Edward Clark was born on April 1, 1815 in New Orleans, Louisiana. His father was named Elijah Clark Jr. His paternal uncle, John Clark, served as the Governor of Georgia from 1819 to 1823. His paternal grandfather was Elijah Clarke. Clark grew up in Georgia. After his father died in the 1830s, he moved to Montgomery, Alabama with his mother and studied the law. Career Clark moved to Texas in 1842 and set up a law practice. He served in the Texas Annexation Convention and two terms as a state representative in the Texas Legislature. During the Mexican–American War he served on the staff of Major General J. Pinckney Henderson and fought in the Battle of Monterrey. John R
John R. (born John Richbourg, August 20, 1910 - February 15, 1986) was an American radio disc jockey who attained fame in the 1950s and 1960s for playing rhythm and blues music on Nashville radio station WLAC. He was also a notable record producer and artist manager. Richbourg was arguably the most popular and charismatic of the four announcers at WLAC who showcased popular African-American music in nightly programs from the late 1940s to the early 1970s. (The other three were Gene Nobles, Herman Grizzard, and Bill "Hoss" Allen.) Later rock music disc jockeys, such as Alan Freed and Wolfman Jack, mimicked Richbourg's practice of using speech that simulated African-American street language of the mid-twentieth century. Richbourg's highly stylized approach to on-air presentation of both music and advertising earned him popularity, but it also created identity confusion. Robert Henry Guinn
Robert Henry Guinn (January 19, 1822 – January 18, 1887) was a Texas politician. Guinn was a Democrat and served District 11, representing Cherokee County, Texas, in the Texas State Senate during the Fifth Texas Legislature, Sixth Texas Legislature, Seventh Texas Legislature, and Eighth Texas Legislature sessions (1853–1861). The Eighth Texas Legislature (1859–61) was called into special session by Governor Sam Houston, and retroactively authorized the Secession Convention, whose ordinance of secession from the United States was approved by the voters on February 23, 186 against the Governor's wishes.
