Abaza Family
The Abaza family ( ar, الأسرة الأباظية) is an Egyptian family of maternal Circassians, Circassian origin. They have had an influence in the late 18th century to modern times. They are believed to have a net worth of over US$800 million. It is known for having produced a large number of politicians under the Muhammad Ali dynasty from the 19th to the mid-20th century. While no individual Abaza has been the ruler or president of Egypt, some Egyptian media have referred to them as one of the "families that rule the country", and as "Egypt's oldest parliamentary dynasty". The Abaza family has also contributed to modern Arabic literature and art through the works of journalist and political activist Fekry Pasha Abaza, author Desouky Bek Abaza, poet Aziz Pasha Abaza, novelist Tharwat Abaza, actor Rushdy Abaza, among others. Idris Ali
Idris Ali (1940 – November 30, 2010) was an Egyptian author of Nubian origin. Early life He was born in Aswan in Upper Egypt and studied at Al-Azhar University. He published his first story in 1969, and eventually wrote six novels and three short story collections. Among his best-known works are ''Dongola'' and ''Poor'', both of which have been published in English by the AUC Press, in translations by Peter Theroux and Elliot Colla respectively. Theroux’s translation of ''Dongola'' received the Arkansas Arabic Translation Award in 1997. Career Idris Ali's work dealt largely with life in his native Nubia. He was a strong voice against the poverty and deprivation suffered by the Nubian people, and he protested against the loss of native land caused by the building of the Aswan High Dam in the 1960s and 70s. Constantine Cavafy
Konstantinos Petrou Kavafis ( el, Κωνσταντίνος Πέτρου Καβάφης ; April 29 (April 17, OS), 1863 – April 29, 1933), known, especially in English, as Constantine P. Cavafy and often published as C. P. Cavafy (), was a Greek poet, journalist, and civil servant from Alexandria. His work, as one translator put it, "holds the historical and the erotic in a single embrace." Cavafy's friend E. M. Forster, the novelist and literary critic, introduced his poems to the English-speaking world in 1923, famously describing him as "a Greek gentleman in a straw hat, standing absolutely motionless at a slight angle to the universe." Cavafy's consciously individual style earned him a place among the most important figures not only in Greek poetry, but in Western poetry as a whole. Siham Bayoumi
Siham Bayyumi (born 1949) is an Egyptian writer and journalist. She was born in Cairo and studied at Helwan University. She has worked as a journalist at the Cairo newspaper Al Gomhuria, and has published works of both fiction and non-fiction. Her books include the short story collection ''Al-Khayl Wa-Al-Layl''. Hussein Bassir
Hussein Bassir is an Egyptian archaeologist of Giza Pyramids and one of the directors (field director) of the excavation team in the Valley of the Golden Mummies at Bahariya Oasis. In 1994, he got his BA in Egyptology from Cairo University. In 2004, he got his MA in Near Eastern Studies from the Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland, United States, where he currently conducts research as a doctoral candidate. He is also the author of several works of fiction in Arabic on ancient Egypt such as '' In Search For Khnum'' and '' The Old Red Hippopotamus''. Bassir worked as a member of Dr Zahi Hawass' archaeological team alongside Justin Ellis and Gregory Peters while participating in many archaeological excavations in sites all over Egypt. Salwa Bakr
Salwa Bakr (born 1949) is an Egyptian critic, novelist and author. Profile of the Egyptian Writer Salwa Bakr She was born in the Matariyya district in Cairo in 1949. Her father was a railway worker. She studied business at Ain Shams University, gaining a BA degree in 1972. She went on to earn another BA in literary criticism in 1976, before embarking on a career in journalism. She worked as a film and theatre critic for various Arabic newspapers and magazines. Bakr lived in Cyprus for a few years with her husband before returning to Egypt in the mid-1980s. Bakr's father died early, leaving her mother a poor widow. Her work often deals with the lives of the impoverished and the marginalized. In his collection of short stories by Arab writers, the Serbian literary critic Srpko Leštarić wrote: "''Part of Salwa Bakr’s popularity lies in her being a counterforce to the conservative voices which challenge her work because they feel threatened by it."'' Kerolos Bahgat
Kerolos Bahgat (born 1991) is an Egyptian writer and assistant surgeon at El-Demerdash hospital. He is well known for his satirical style of writing in the field of psychology, as portrayed in his book ''The Thought Experiment for Mama's Boy'', among many others. His works were published by a number of publishing firms including Dar Toya For Publishing and Distributing and The Book Home Bookstore. Personal life Bahgat has not always been passionate about writing. Rather, he enjoyed acting, and played a number of roles throughout his university years before deciding to stop to better focus on his education. Alaa Al Aswany
Alaa Al Aswany ( ar, علاء الأسواني, ; born 26 May 1957) is an Egyptian writer, novelist, and a founding member of the political movement Kefaya. Early life and career Al Aswany was born on 26 May 1957 in Cairo. His mother, Zainab, came from an aristocratic family; her uncle was a Pasha and Minister of Education before the Egyptian Revolution of 1952. His father, Abbas Al Aswany, was from Aswan (in Lower Nubia) and was a lawyer and writer who "is remembered as being a captivating and charismatic speaker with a broad following and loyalty within a cross-section of the Egyptian revolutionary intelligentsia". Abbas Al Aswany wrote a regular back-page essay in the Egyptian weekly magazine Rose al-Yūsuf entitled ''Aswaaniyat''. In 1972, he was "the recipient of the state award for literature". Radwa Ashour
Radwa Ashour ( ar, رضوى عاشور) (26 May 1946 – 30 November 2014) was an Egyptian novelist. Life Ashour was born in El-Manial to Mustafa Ashour, a lawyer and literature enthusiast, and Mai Azzam, a poet and an artist. She graduated from Cairo University with a BA degree in 1967. In 1972, she received her MA in Comprehensive Literature from the same university. In 1975, Ashour graduated from the University of Massachusetts Amherst with a PhD in African American Literature. Her dissertation was entitled The search for a Black poetics: a study of Afro-American critical writings. While preparing for her PhD, Ashour was remarked as the first doctoral candidate in English who studied the literature of the African-American. She taught at Ain Shams University, Cairo.
