Eglė the Queen of Serpents, alternatively Eglė the Queen of Grass Snakes ( lt, Eglė žalčių karalienė), is a Lithuanian folk tale, first published by M. Jasewicz in 1837. ''Eglė the Queen of Serpents'' is one of the best-known Lithuanian fairy tales with many references to the Baltic mythology. Over a hundred slightly diverging versions of the plot have been collected. Its mythological background has been an interest of Lithuanian and foreign researchers of Indo-European mythology; Gintaras Beresnevičius considered it being a Lithuanian theogonic myth. The tale features not only human– reptile shapeshifting, but irreversible human–tree shapeshifting as well. Numerology is also evident in the tale, such as twelve sons, three daughters, three days, three tricks, three weeks of feast, nine years under the oath of marriage, three tasks given to Eglė by her husband to fulfill and nine days of visits. Eglė Rakauskaitė, currently better known as Egle Rake, is a Lithuanian visual artist. She belongs to the first generation of contemporary artists who came onto the Lithuanian art scene around the re-establishment of the country's independence in 1990 and is now recognised to be among the most notable Lithuanian artists to have emerged during the 90s. Early years (1993–1998) Object art Rakauskaitė was born in 1967 in Vilnius. She graduated from the painting department of the Vilnius Academy of Arts in 1993. For a couple of years after graduation she participated in the emerging Lithuanian fashion scene, experimenting with the incorporation of non-traditional materials and humorous associations in designs which were intended to shock the public. The first works which Rake exhibited in a visual art context were related to her experience of the fashion world. Eglė Jurgaitytė (born 24 January 1998, in Vilnius) is a Lithuanian singer and radio presenter. Jurgaitytė represented Lithuania at Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2008 where she finished in 3rd place. Career She started her singer career in 2002 when she was just four years old. In 2007 and 2008 Jurgaitytė participated at Lithuanian National Radio and Television talent show, Mažųjų žvaigždžių ringas 3", and reached final. In 2008 she won national Lithuanian selection for Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2008 and represented Lithuania in the contest. In the final, she sang her song "Laiminga diena" and reached 3rd place. Eglė Balčiūnaitė (born October 31, 1988, in Šiauliai) is a track and field middle-distance runner who competes internationally for Lithuania. She competed in the 2008 Olympics in 800 m distance and finished 22nd. She took part in the 2009 European Athletics U23 Championships in Kaunas and placed 6th in the final. She participated in the 2010 IAAF World Indoor Championships where she achieved her personal best and finished 5th in the indoor 800 m discipline.
