Egidius Federle
Egidius Federle (10 October 1810, Stühlingen - 21 March 1876, Freiburg im Breisgau) was a German landscape painter and illustrator. Life and work From 1822 to 1823, he served an apprenticeship with the Swiss painter and publisher, Johann Ludwig Bleuler, in Schaffhausen, then finished his apprentice period in 1826 with Bleuler's brother-in-law, Johann Heinrich Uster (1774-1866), in Feuerthalen. After that, he lived with Bleuler and, in 1833, followed him, together with several other painters from Bleuler's school, to Schloss Laufen, above the Rheinfall. He continued to work for Bleuler's publishing company, specializing in the creation of vedute; contributing illustrations for numerous books. Stühlingen is a town in the Waldshut district in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It is situated on the border with Switzerland, with a border crossing to the village of Oberwiesen in Schleitheim municipality, 15 km northwest of Schaffhausen town. Johann Ludwig Bleuler
Johann Ludwig Bleuler, sometimes called Louis (12 February 1792 – 28 March 1850) was a Swiss painter, landscape artist and publisher. Biography He was born in Feuerthalen. His father, Johann Heinrich, was a landscape painter and member of the (lesser masters). His older brother, Johann Heinrich, the Younger (1787–1857) also became a painter. He began his artistic training in his father's workshop, where he learned painting and draftsmanship. From 1817 to 1818, he travelled throughout the Rhine region, making landscape sketches and studies. The following year, he participated in an exhibition at the Künstlergesellschaft (an artists' association) in Zürich. That same year, he made a combination study and business trip to Brussels and Amsterdam. During a subsequent stay in Paris, he met his future wife, Antoinette Trillié. Feuerthalen is a municipality in the district of Andelfingen in the canton of Zürich in Switzerland. Langwiesen also belongs to the same municipality. History Feuerthalen is first mentioned in 876 as ''Langewisa''. In 1318 it was mentioned as ''Fuirtal an dem Rine''. Geography Feuerthalen has an area of . Of this area, 16.1% is used for agricultural purposes, while 43.8% is forested. Laufen Castle (Switzerland)
Laufen Castle (german: Schloss Laufen) is a castle in the municipality of Laufen-Uhwiesen in the Swiss canton of Zurich. It is a Swiss heritage site of national significance overlooking the Rhine Falls. The first documented reference to the castle dates to the year 858 when it was the home of the Barons of Laufen. It passed through several owners until the Old Zürich War (1439–1450) when the castle was acquired by the Fulach family, from whom the city of Zurich bought the castle in 1544. Following the Helvetic Republic (1798–1803) the castle was once again in private ownership, with the city of Zurich reacquiring the castle by buying it again in 1941. The castle now serves as a tourist attraction, and contains a restaurant and a youth hostel. A ''veduta'' (Italian for "view"; plural ''vedute'') is a highly detailed, usually large-scale painting or, more often, print of a cityscape or some other vista. The painters of ''vedute'' are referred to as ''vedutisti''. Origins This genre of landscape originated in Flanders, where artists such as Paul Bril painted ''vedute'' as early as the 16th century.
