The Egerton family (pronunciation: "''edge-er-ton''") is a British aristocratic family. Over time, several members of the Egerton family were made Dukes, Earls, knights, baronets and peers. Hereditary titles held by the Egerton family include the dukedoms of Bridgewater (1720–1803) and Sutherland (since 1963), as well as the earldoms of Bridgewater (1617–1829), Wilton (1801–1999) and Egerton (1897–1909). Mary Chavelita Dunne Bright (born Mary Elizabeth Annie Dunne; 14 December 1859 – 12 August 1945), better known by her pen name George Egerton (pronounced Edg'er-ton), was a writer of short stories, novels, plays and translations, noted for her psychological probing, innovative narrative techniques, and outspokenness about women's need for freedom, including sexual freedom. Egerton, (pronounced ''"edgerton"''), is a village in the unparished area of South Turton, in the northern part of the Metropolitan Borough of Bolton, Greater Manchester, England. Historically a part of Lancashire, it is situated three miles north of Bolton and 12 miles north west of Manchester city centre within the West Pennine Moors. Egerton was originally part of the township of Turton in the ancient parish of Bolton-le-Moors and consisted of a small, remote, farming community known as Walmsley. The name Egerton was brought to the area in 1663 when Ralph Egerton married the step-daughter of James Walmsley, after which their property became known as Egerton's. Egerton is a village and civil parish in the Ashford District of Kent, England. The village is on the Greensand Ridge 9 miles (14.4 km) north of Ashford and stretches three miles south into a lower plain towards the West Stour. The parish is a relatively scattered rural one; the settlement of Stonebridge Green, adjacent to Egerton village centre, is also in the parish. Geography A narrow escarpment of dense Greensand forms the north of the parish where the largest single residential area is. The Greensand Way runs in part through the churchyard of St James's Church in the village. The northern slopes of this are two named woods. Most of the slopes and plain below to the south is used for mixed farming and hedgerows, with a lower proportion of woodland and wider buffer areas between settled farmstead clusters of homes. Baron Egerton
Baron Egerton, of Tatton in the County Palatine of Chester, was a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created on 15 April 1859 for William Egerton (1806–1883), a politician from the Egerton family. History William Egerton (1806–1883) had earlier represented Lymington and Cheshire North in the House of Commons. His branch of the Egerton family is descended in the female line from Thomas Egerton, of Tatton Park in Cheshire, youngest son of John Egerton, 2nd Earl of Bridgewater. Thomas Egerton's granddaughter Hester Egerton (died 1780) married William Tatton. In 1780 they assumed by Royal licence the surname of Egerton in lieu of Tatton. Their son William Tatton Egerton sat as Member of Parliament for Chester. His son Wilbraham Egerton also represented this constituency in the House of Commons. Egerton Collection
The Egerton Collection is a collection of historical manuscripts held in the British Library. The core of the collection comprises 67 manuscripts bequeathed to the British Museum in 1829 by Francis Henry Egerton, 8th Earl of Bridgewater, along with £12,000 (the Bridgewater fund). To this sum a further £3000 (the Farnborough Fund) was added in 1838 by Egerton's cousin, Charles Long, 1st Baron Farnborough.
