Eexterveenschekanaal
Eexterveenschekanaal is a village in the Dutch province of Drenthe. It is a part of the municipality of Aa en Hunze, and lies about 19 km east of Assen. History The village was first mentioned in 1899 as "Eexterveensche kanaal of Eexterveensche Compagnie", and means "canal of the peat excavation of Eext". It is used both for the village and the canal. Between 1771 and 1775, the canal was dug by the Annerveensche Heeren Compagnie to exploit the peat in the area. The canal is parallel to the border with the Province of Groningen. In 1812, S.M.S. de Ranitz, becomes the new owner of the company and the focus shifted from peat excavation to selling little parcels of farm land with real estate. Aa en Hunze () is a municipality in the northeastern Netherlands. The names 'Aa' (more precisely the 'Drentsche Aa') and 'Hunze' refer to two small rivers through the municipality. Assen () is a municipality and a city in the northeastern Netherlands, and is the capital (politics), capital of the province of Drenthe. Potato Starch
Potato starch is starch extracted from potatoes. The cells of the root tubers of the potato plant contain leucoplasts (starch grains). To extract the starch, the potatoes are crushed, and the starch grains are released from the destroyed cells. The starch is then left to settle out of solution or separated by hydrocyclones, then dried to powder. Potato starch contains typical large oval spherical granules ranging in size from 5 to 100 μm. Potato starch is a refined starch, containing minimal protein or fat. This gives the powder a clear white colour, and the cooked starch typical characteristics of neutral taste, good clarity, high binding strength, long texture, and minimal tendency to foaming or yellowing of the solution. Stadskanaal
Stadskanaal () is a town and municipality with a population of 32,715 in the province of Groningen in the northeast of the Netherlands. It was named after the canal Stadskanaal. From 1800 until 1900 this area was ideal for its peat mining, and so the canal came to ship all the peat to Groningen, the capital of the province. In the Gronings dialect the town is called "Knoal" and the locals are called "Knoalsters". Wildervank
Wildervank is a village in the Dutch province of Groningen. It is located in the municipality of Veendam, about 3 km south of the centre of Veendam itself. It was founded in 1647 by Adriaan Geerts Wildervanck as a peat colony in the Wildervankster bog. Wildervank was a separate municipality until 1969, when the area was divided between Veendam and Stadskanaal. History The Wildervankster bog was a raised bog located to the west of Oude Pekela. Adriaan Geerts settled in Oude Pekela to study the exploitation of peat by the city of Groningen. The Wildevankster bog was still untouched, and Geerts wanted to purchase it. He bought the bog in 1647 in order to establish his own peat colony, but needed to procure a ƒ250,000 mortgage from an Amsterdam merchant. Geerts would later use the surname Wildervanck. Eext
Eext is a village in the Dutch province of Drenthe. It is a part of the municipality of Aa en Hunze, and lies about 12 km east of Assen. There are three ''hunebedden'' (dolmen) near the village. History The village was first mentioned in 1309 as "in villis Esethe". The etymology is unclear. Eext is an ''esdorp'' from the Early Middle Ages which is located on the Hondsrug. It has been known to exist as early as 944. It has one large ''brink'' (village square) on the south side and four smaller ''brinks'' on the north side. The Dutch Reformed church is a simple neoclassical church from 1841. The peat around Eext has been excavated in the 18th century, and around 1875, the heaths were cultivated. Postal codes in the Netherlands, known as ''postcodes'', are alphanumeric, consisting of four digits followed by two uppercase letters.
