Edwin Thomas Maynard
Edwin Thomas Maynard (21 March 1878 – 20 November 1961) known as Edwin Thomas or "Beddoe" Thomas was a Welsh international rugby union prop who played club rugby for Newport RFC. Thomas was part of the Wales team that won the Triple Crown in 1909, and faced all three major Southern Hemisphere teams; New Zealand, South Africa and Australia, for Newport. Upper Cwmbran
Upper Cwmbran ( cy, Cwmbrân Uchaf) is a suburb of Cwmbran, Torfaen in Wales. It lies in between the suburbs of Pontnewydd and Thornhill. It is a community and electoral ward of Torfaen County Borough Council. History & Amenities The area is mainly made up of 1950s and 1960s houses with occasional older Victorian properties. There are two pubs, The Queen Inn and The Bush Inn, along with a convenience store. The main thoroughfare is Thornhill Road, which eventually becomes Ty Pwca Road as it heads towards Pontnewydd. Upper Cwmbran was home to the Cwmbran Brewery which closed in December 2009, and a Welsh longhouse called Gelligravog, built in 1610 above The Square. Gelligravog has more recently become a bed and breakfast known as Gelligravog Farmhouse B&B. The Square is a collection of miners' cottages from about 1820. 1909 Home Nations Championship
The 1909 Home Nations Championship was the twenty-seventh series of the rugby union Home Nations Championship. Six matches were played between 16 January and 20 March. It was contested by England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Although not officially part of the tournament until 1910, matches were arranged with the French national team which were played during the Championship. During the 1909 Championship, three Home Nations faced France; England, Wales and Ireland. As they had done in the 1908 Championship, Wales beat all three Home Nation opponents and France, taking the Championship title, the Triple Crown and the Grand Slam. Pontnewydd
Pontnewydd is a suburb of Cwmbran in the county borough of Torfaen, south-east Wales. It should not be confused with Pontnewynydd in nearby Pontypool. An 18th century settlement within the historical parish of Llanfrechfa Upper, Pontnewydd became an important part of the Industrial Revolution in the Eastern Valley of South Wales. The canal, railway and river (Afon Llwyd) encouraged Victorian industries to flourish in this area which resulted in a steady rise in population. Pontnewydd is both a community and an electoral ward of Torfaen County Borough Council. Harry Jarman
Harry Jarman (1883 – 13 December 1928) was a Welsh international forward who played club rugby for Newport and Pontypool. He won four caps for Wales and also played for the British Isles in their 1910 tour of South Africa. In 1928 Jarman died when he threw himself in front of a runaway coal truck which was heading towards a group of playing children.Godwin (1984), pg 103. Rugby career Jarman was born in Talywain, and joined Talywain Rugby Club and in 1908 joined first class side Newport and in December of that year turned out for the club against the touring Australian team. Jarman made his debut for Wales against England in the 1910 Five Nations Championship under the captaincy of Billy Trew.
