Edwin M. Gill
Edwin Maurice Gill (July 20, 1899 – July 16, 1978) was an American politician, lawyer, and public finance official who served as North Carolina State Treasurer from 1953 to 1977. Early life Edwin Gill was born in Laurinburg, North Carolina, United States on July 20, 1899, to Thomas Jeffries Gill and Mamie North Gill. His father was a banker and at one point served as mayor of Laurinburg. He graduated from Laurinburg High School and studied at Trinity College from 1922 to 1924, leaving once he passed the North Carolina State Bar examination. He also studied for one year at the New York School of Fine and Applied Arts. He never married. Career Gill practiced law with the firm Gibson and Gill from 1924 to 1931. A member of the Democratic Party, he was elected to the North Carolina House of Representatives to represent Scotland County in the 1929 and 1931 legislative sessions. North Carolina State Treasurer
The North Carolina State Treasurer is a statewide elected office in the U.S. state of North Carolina responsible for overseeing the financial operations of state government. The current state treasurer is Dale Folwell. The office of state treasurer has existed since 1715 in the Province of North Carolina; at that time, the treasurer was appointed by the lower house of the legislature. In 1740, the treasurer's office was divided into two districts, and in 1779, into four. In 1784, the North Carolina General Assembly brought the treasurers under one single office, appointed jointly by both houses of the legislature. Under the North Carolina Constitution of 1868, the treasurer became a position elected by popular vote, rather than appointed. Frank Porter Graham
Frank Porter Graham (October 14, 1886 – February 16, 1972) was an American educator and political activist. A professor of history, he was elected President of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1930, and he later became the first President of the consolidated University of North Carolina system. Graham was an active champion of many liberal causes including academic freedom, economic justice, civil rights, disarmament and world peace. He served on numerous advisory boards for Presidents Franklin Roosevelt and Harry Truman, and in 1949 he was appointed by the North Carolina governor to fill a vacant seat in the United States Senate. His effort to win election in the following year turned into a bitter and ultimately unsuccessful struggle with conservative Democrat Willis Smith. North Carolina State University (NC State) is a public land-grant research university in Raleigh, North Carolina. Terry Sanford
James Terry Sanford (August 20, 1917April 18, 1998) was an American lawyer and politician from North Carolina. A member of the Democratic Party, Sanford served as the 65th Governor of North Carolina from 1961 to 1965, was a two-time U.S. presidential candidate in the 1970s, and served as a U.S. senator from 1986 to 1993. He was a strong proponent of public education and introduced several reforms and new programs in North Carolina's schools and institutions of higher education as the state's governor.
