Edwin Fowles
Edwin Wesley Howard Fowles (17 June 1871 – 29 December 1945) was a barrister, journalist, and member of the Queensland Legislative Council. Early life Fowles was born in December 1871 at Oxley, Queensland, to William Fowles, schoolteacher, and his wife Nancy (née Whittle). He began his education at home, being taught by his father before attending Brisbane Normal School. Electoral District Of Merthyr
Merthyr was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland from 1912 to 1992. First created for the 1912 state election, the district was based in inner Brisbane centred on the suburb of New Farm, covering areas that previously belonged to the district of Fortitude Valley. Merthyr was abolished by the 1991 redistribution, taking effect at the 1992 state election. Most of its territory was absorbed into the electorate of Brisbane Central with parts also added to the new district of Clayfield. Peter Alfred McLachlan
Peter Alfred McLachlan (23 September 1867 – 27 October 1929) was a printer and member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography McLachlan was born in Dundee, Scotland, to parents Andrew McLachlan and his wife Catherine (née McTavish). He came to Queensland with his family in 1873 and attended Gympie Catholic School. On leaving school he became an apprentice printer, working for '' The Gympie Times'' and then the ''Eidsvold Register''. He then moved to Brisbane and found work as a journeyman with the Queensland Government Printing Office. In 1892 he married Mary Donnelly. Awarded the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice by the pope, McLachlan died after entering the Mater Misericordiae Hospital to undergo an operation in October 1929. His funeral proceeded from St Stephen's Cathedral in Brisbane to the Lutwyche Cemetery. Elections were held in the Australian state of Queensland on 8 May 1926 to elect the 72 members of the state's Legislative Assembly. The Labor government was seeking its fifth continuous term in office since the 1915 election. William McCormack was contesting his first election as Premier. Thomas Wilson (Queensland Politician)
Thomas Wilson (5 May 1865 – 19 May 1933) was an Australian miner and a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. He was also Mayor of Brisbane in 1909 and 1925. Biography Wilson was born in Riddells Creek, Victoria, to parents James Wilson and his wife Mary (née McLean). He was educated in Riddells Creek. As a young man, he left home to work in the primary industries and later as a shearer in the Riverina district. He then worked at the Cobar copper mine and came to Queensland in 1884 where he invested in mining and pastoral pursuits. Digby Denham
Digby Frank Denham (25 January 1859 – 10 May 1944) was a politician and businessman in Queensland, Australia. He was a Premier of Queensland and Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. He was the first of only two Queensland Premiers to lose their own seat at a general election. Early life Denham was born in Langport, Somerset, England on 25 January 1859 to William Denham, a baker, and his wife Edna Grace, née Cooke. He studied at Langport Grammar School before being indentured to a drapery firm in July 1873. In 1881 Denham migrated to South Australia where he formed a business partnership in Mallala with a commercial traveller, George Cable Knight. The Australian Labor Party (Queensland Branch), commonly known as Queensland Labor or as just Labor inside Queensland, is the state branch of the Australian Labor Party in the state of Queensland. It has functioned in the state since the 1880s. History Trade unionists in Queensland had begun attempting to secure parliamentary representation as early as the mid-1880s. William McNaughton Galloway, the president of the Seamen's Union, mounted an unsuccessful campaign as an independent in an 1886 by-election. David Bowman (Australian Politician)
David Bowman (24 August 1860 – 25 February 1916) was a Labor politician in the Legislative Assembly of Queensland and Queensland Leader of the Opposition from 1908 to 1912. Early life Bowman was born in Bendigo, Victoria on 4 August 1860. He was son of Archibald Bowman, a miner and Isabella Bowman (née Spence) both of whom were born in Scotland. Trained as a bootmaker in Victoria, Bowman moved north to Queensland in 1888. The following year, Bowman became the president of the Brisbane District Council of the Australian Labour Federation (ALF). In 1891, as an employee of the ALF, Bowman was responsible for organizing shearers and bushworkers during the pastoral strike. In 1892, he was elected as vice-president and the following year he became the president of the ALF. Fortitude Valley, originally known as Hamlet of Fortitude Valley, was a Legislative Assembly electorate in the state of Queensland. History Fortitude Valley was one of the original sixteen electorates proclaimed in 1859. It was originally known as "Hamlet of Fortitude Valley", but the name was shortened to "Fortitude Valley" in the 1872 redistribution. Initially it was a single member constituency, but became a dual member constituency in 1885, reverting to a single member in the 1910 redistribution. The electorate was abolished in the 1959 redistribution, mostly being incorporated into the Electoral district of Brisbane and the Electoral district of Merthyr.
