Edwin E. Woodman
Edwin Ellis Woodman (June 1, 1838August 29, 1912) was an American engineer and Republican politician. He was a member of the Wisconsin State Senate, representing Juneau and Sauk counties in the 1880 and 1881 sessions. Biography Edwin Woodman was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on June 1, 1838. He was raised and educated in St. Louis until the death of his father in 1853. He and his mother then moved to Monroe, Wisconsin, where he completed his education and began his interest in engineering, studying under Joseph Thompson Dodge. He briefly attended the University of Wisconsin to improve his understanding of higher mathematics, but could not afford to continue his studies. He took up teaching in order to finance his further education, but his work was interrupted by the outbreak of the American Civil War. Wisconsin's 14th State Senate District
The 14th Senate District of Wisconsin is one of 33 districts in the Wisconsin State Senate. Located in central Wisconsin, the district comprises Green Lake and Marquette counties, and most of Columbia and Waupaca counties, as well as the southern half of Adams County, the eastern half of Waushara County, northwest Dodge County, western Fond du Lac County, and parts of northeast Sauk County and western Outagamie County. Molokai , or Molokai (), is the fifth most populated of the eight major islands that make up the Hawaiian Islands, Hawaiian Islands archipelago in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Father Damien
Father Damien or Saint Damien of Molokai, SS.CC. or Saint Damien De Veuster ( nl, Pater Damiaan or '; 3 January 1840 – 15 April 1889), born Jozef De Veuster, was a Roman Catholic priest from Belgium and member of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, a missionary religious institute. He was recognized for his ministry, which he led from 1873 until his death in 1889, in the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi to people with leprosy (Hansen's disease), who lived in government-mandated medical quarantine in a settlement on the Kalaupapa Peninsula of Molokai. During this time, he taught the Catholic faith to the people of Hawaii. Father Damien also cared for the patients and established leaders within the community to build houses, schools, roads, hospitals, and churches. Joseph Dutton
Joseph Dutton (April 27, 1843 – March 26, 1931) was a Civil War veteran and Union Army lieutenant, who converted to Catholicism and later worked as a missionary with Father Damien. Biography He was born Ira Barnes Dutton in Stowe, Vermont, son of Ezra Dutton and Abigail Barnes. Dutton carried out his studies at Old Academy and Milton Academy, Wisconsin and in 1861 enlisted in 13th Wisconsin Infantry under Colonel Maurice Malooney. He was a quartermaster in the 13th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment during the American Civil War. He had been raised Protestant in Baptist Sunday schools and was for a time married. The marriage did not last as his wife (who he never mentioned by name) was unfaithful and Dutton developed problems with alcohol. He quit drinking in 1876 and later took the name Joseph.
