Edwin A. Robson
Edwin Albert Robson (April 16, 1905 – October 21, 1986) was a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. Education and career Born in Chicago, Illinois, Robson received a Bachelor of Laws from the DePaul University College of Law in 1928 and entered private practice in Chicago. He became a Judge of the Superior Court of Cook County in 1945. In 1949 he became Chief Justice of that court. He became a Judge of the Illinois Appellate Court in 1951, a role he served in until his appointment to the federal bench. Federal judicial service Robson received a recess appointment from President Dwight D. Eisenhower on September 29, 1958, to a seat vacated by Judge Winfred George Knoch on the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. Senior Status
Senior status is a form of semi-retirement for United States federal judges. To qualify, a judge in the Federal judiciary of the United States, federal court system must be at least 65 years old, and the sum of the judge's age and years of service as a federal judge must be at least 80 years. As long as senior judges carry at least a 25 percent caseload or meet other criteria for activity, they remain entitled to maintain a staffed office and chambers, including a secretary and their normal complement of law clerks, and they continue to receive annual cost-of-living increases. Senior judges vacate their seats on the bench, and the President of the United States, president may appoint new full-time judges to fill those seats. Some U.S. states have similar systems for senior judges. The United States Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (J.P.M.L. or the Panel) is a special body within the United States federal court system which manages multidistrict litigation. It was established by Congress in 1968 by , and has the authority to determine whether civil actions pending in two or more federal judicial districts should be transferred to a single federal district court for pretrial proceedings.
