Edwards Hall (Elkton, Kentucky)
Edwards Hall, located on a knoll overlooking Goebel Ave in Elkton, Kentucky, was built around 1821 by Benjamin Edwards. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. History Edwards Hall is a large and stately two-story brick residence that was built in 1821 by former U.S. Representative from Maryland Benjamin Edwards. He was a member of a prominent family, including his brother, John Edwards, who represented Kentucky in the Virginia House of Delegates before Kentucky became a state and helped Kentucky attain statehood, was elected to both houses of the State Legislature, and was one of the first two U.S. Senators to represent Kentucky. Elkton is a home rule-class city in and the county seat of Todd County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 2,062 at the 2010 census. History The city was founded by Major John Gray and established by the state assembly in 1820. It is named for a nearby watering hole previously hosting a large elk herd. Francis Marion Bristow (August 11, 1804 – June 10, 1864) was a United States representative from Kentucky and businessman. He was born in Clark County, Kentucky. He pursued preparatory studies and studied law. He was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Elkton, Kentucky. Bristow was a member of the Kentucky House of Representatives 1831–1833. Later, he served in the Kentucky Senate in 1846 and was a delegate to the Kentucky constitutional convention in 1849. He was elected as a Whig to the Thirty-third United States Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Presley Underwood Ewing and served from December 4, 1854, to March 3, 1855, and was elected as a candidate of the Opposition Party to the Thirty-sixth United States Congress (March 4, 1859 – March 3, 1861). Benjamin Helm Bristow (June 20, 1832 – June 22, 1896) was an American lawyer and politician who served as the 30th U.S. Treasury Secretary and the first Solicitor General. A Union military officer, Bristow was a Republican Party reformer and civil rights advocate. During his tenure as Secretary of Treasury, he is primarily known for breaking up and prosecuting the Whiskey Ring at the behest of President Grant, a corrupt tax evasion profiteering ring that depleted the national treasury. Additionally, Bristow promoted gold standard currency rather than paper money. Bristow was one of Grant's most popular Cabinet members among reformers.
