''Edward Thomas'' is a narrow gauge steam locomotive. Built by Kerr Stuart & Co. Ltd. at the California Works, Stoke-on-Trent in 1921, it was delivered new to the Corris Railway where it ran until 1948. After that railway closed, the locomotive was brought to the Talyllyn Railway in 1951, then restored, and remains in working order at the heritage railway. It has carried the operating number 4 under four successive owners. History Corris Railway The Corris Railway was a gauge tramway built in 1859, which ran from Machynlleth north to Corris and on to Aberllefenni to serve local slate quarries. The railway company owned three locomotives, built in 1878; by the end of World War I all three were in poor condition, and the railway ordered a fourth, a modified version of Kerr Stuart's "Tattoo" class, in 1921. Abergynolwyn railway station is a station on the Talyllyn Railway near Abergynolwyn, Gwynedd, in Mid-Wales. It is from . The name 'Abergynolwyn' means 'Mouth-of-the-River-with-a-Whirlpool'. History Pre-preservation Operation Abergynolwyn was the original passenger terminus. A mineral line extended south-west to the incline up to the slate quarry at Bryn Eglwys. The railway's first locomotive shed was at Ty Dwr, west of the station. This location was chosen as it had a plentiful water supply from the local stream, and was close to the quarry, which supplied some of the building materials. From February 1867, passenger trains started from instead, where the railway's permanent locomotive shed had been built. The Hunslet Engine Company is a locomotive-building company, founded in 1864 in Hunslet, England. It manufactured steam locomotives for over 100 years and currently manufactures diesel shunting locomotives. The company is part of Ed Murray & Sons. Aberllefenni Slate Quarry
Aberllefenni quarry is the collective name of three slate quarries, Foel Grochan, Hen Gloddfa (also known as Hen Chwarel) and Ceunant Ddu, located in Cwm Hengae, just to the west of Aberllefenni, Gwynedd, North Wales. It was the longest continually operated slate mine in the world until its closure in 2003. Foel Grochan is the quarry on the north side of the valley, facing Ceunant Ddu and Hen Gloddfa on the south; all three were worked as a single concern throughout their history. Rock was mainly extracted underground, though all three quarries had open pits as well. History Aberllefenni quarry may have started operating as early as the 14th century. The Spooners of Porthmadog refers to the Spooner family of Porthmadog, North Wales who made important contributions to the development of narrow gauge railways both locally and throughout the world. ''Dolgoch'' is a narrow gauge 0-4-0 well tank steam locomotive. It was built by Fletcher, Jennings & Co. and is one of the oldest locomotives still in active service. Lionel Thomas Caswall Rolt (usually abbreviated to Tom Rolt or L. T. C. Rolt) (11 February 1910 – 9 May 1974) was a prolific English writer and the biographer of major civil engineering figures including Isambard Kingdom Brunel and Thomas Telford. Sir Henry Haydn Jones (27 December 1863 – 2 July 1950) was a Welsh Liberal Party politician. Upbringing Henry (sometimes known as "Harry") Haydn Jones was born in Ruthin, Wales. Bryn Eglwys
Bryn Eglwys quarry was a slate quarry and mine near Abergynolwyn, in Merionethshire (now part of Gwynedd), Wales. More than 300 men worked at the site, making it the principal employer in the area. Two veins of slate, known as the Broad Vein and the Narrow Vein, were worked. The geology continues eastwards towards Corris and Dinas Mawddwy, and westwards towards Tywyn. It was one of many quarries that worked these veins. The site, which was in operation for just over 100 years, covered almost . It had several long tunnels up to to .
