Edward Little House
The Edward Little House is an historic house at 217 Main Street in Auburn, Maine. Built in 1827, the Federal style house is one of the oldest on the south side of Auburn, and is most notable as the home of Edward Little, a major landowner and proponent of the development of Auburn. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. Description and history The Edward Little House stands on the west side of Main Street, south of Auburn's downtown area, at the corner of Vine Street. It is a -story wood-frame structure, five bays wide, with a center entry flanked by sidelight windows and topped by a fanlight. A two-story ell extends from the southern part of the rear. The interior is well preserved, its Federal period details including a handsome curving central staircase. Auburn is a city in south-central Maine within the United States. The city serves as the county seat of Androscoggin County. The population was 24,061 at the 2020 census. Auburn and its sister city Lewiston are known locally as the Twin Cities or Lewiston–Auburn (L–A). History The area was originally part of the Pejepscot Purchase, land bought in 1714 by an association of people from Boston and Portsmouth following the Treaty of Portsmouth, which brought peace between the Abenaki Indians and the settlers of present-day Maine. In 1736, however, the Massachusetts General Court granted a large section of the land to veterans of the 1690 Battle of Quebec. Conflicting claims led to prolonged litigation; consequently, settlement was delayed until after the French and Indian Wars. Main Street Historic District (Auburn, Maine)
The Main Street Historic District is a small residential historic district south of the downtown area of Auburn, Maine. The fourteen houses in the district represent a cross-section of residential development during Auburn's growth between about 1825 and 1925. The district extends along Main Street, from Drummond Street south just past Elm Street, and includes a few houses on Elm and Vine Streets. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. Description Auburn rose on the banks of the Androscoggin River with the humble beginnings of a log driver's camp in the late 19th century, and did not benefit in the 19th century the way neighboring Lewiston did, which had a more suitable siting for textile mills. Edward Little (philanthropist)
Edward Little (1773–1849) was an attorney and philanthropist who founded Edward Little High School in Auburn, Maine. Little's father, Josiah, was a descendant of one of the first settlers of what is now Auburn, Maine. Edward Little was born in 1773 in Newbury, Massachusetts, and attended Phillips Exeter before graduating from Dartmouth College in 1798. Little eventually became a successful attorney and entrepreneur in the city of Newburyport, but after a devastating fire in 1811 he moved to Portland, Maine, several years later, and then in 1826 he moved to what is now Auburn. After his father's death in 1830, Little inherited land in the Auburn area. Little was known as "a quiet, scholarly person who was known for his devotion to the community."Ralph B.
