Edward Kewley
Edward Kewley (20 June 1852 – 17 April 1940) was an English sportsman who played rugby union for England and also played first-class cricket for Lancashire. He captained England three times, and was the first captain to be drawn from the north of England as well as captaining England in the first ever 15-a-side international. Early life Edward Kewley was born in Farnham Royal on 20 June 1852, to Thomas Kewley, curate of Farnham Royal, and his wife Jane. He was educated at Marlborough College and on leaving school he travelled to his father's home county of Lancashire to pursue a career in the cotton industry as a cotton broker. The style of rugby taught at Marlborough in the 1870s favoured kicking and dribbling rather than handling. This was at a time when a number of varying interpretations of the game existed. Farnham Royal
Farnham Royal is a village and civil parish within Buckinghamshire, England. It is in the south of the county, immediately north of Slough (with which it is contiguous), and around 22 miles west of Charing Cross, Central London. Within the parish boundary is the village of Farnham Common and the hamlet of Farnham Park. History The village name 'Farnham' is Anglo Saxon in origin, and means 'homestead where ferns grow'. Murray Wyatt Marshall
Murray Marshall was a rugby union international who represented England from 1873 to 1878. He also captained his country. Early life Murray Wyatt Marshall was born 7 October 1852 in Guildford and baptised on 3 November 1852 in the parish of St Peter and St Paul, Godalming. His parents were Murray (a merchant) and Eliza Marshall. He had two older brothers, George and Bryant, and six younger siblings, Milicent, Lionel Hasler, Oswald Percival, Constance Emily, Octavia and Walter Douglas. After leaving Wellington College he became a timber merchant and married Alice Maud Everitt, eighteen years his junior, in 1892 and they had a daughter, Madelaine. Francis Luscombe
Francis Luscombe (23 November 1849 – 17 July 1926) was a rugby union international who represented England from 1872 to 1876. He also captained his country. Early life Francis Luscombe was born on 1849 in Norwood, then in Surrey. He was baptised at Ifield Church and with his family soon after moved to Croydon His father, John Henry Luscombe (1797 to 1883), was a shipowner who had married late in life at the age of fifty to Clara Bristow (1823 to 1910), twenty-six years his junior. Francis, known as Frank in his family, had at least three siblings, an older brother John Henry "Harry" (1848–1937), a younger brother, Alfred (1851–1942) and a younger sister Clara Elizabeth "Kitty" (1854–1900).
