Edward Jessup, Jr.
Edward Jessup (May 26, 1766 – November 4, 1815) was a farmer and political figure in Upper Canada. He was born in Albany, New York in 1766, the son of Edward Jessup, a United Empire Loyalist. He served with his father's Loyal Rangers, becoming a captain. After the American Revolution, he settled in Augusta Township. Jessup represented Grenville in the Legislative Assembly of Upper Canada from 1797 to 1800. In 1800, he was named justice of the peace in the Johnstown District. He became lieutenant-colonel in the Leeds militia in 1809. With his father, he laid out the town of Prescott in 1810. He died at Prescott in 1815. Upper Canada
The Province of Upper Canada (french: link=no, province du Haut-Canada) was a part of British Canada established in 1791 by the Kingdom of Great Britain, to govern the central third of the lands in British North America, formerly part of the Province of Quebec since 1763. Upper Canada included all of modern-day Southern Ontario and all those areas of Northern Ontario in the which had formed part of New France, essentially the watersheds of the Ottawa River or Lakes Huron and Superior, excluding any lands within the watershed of Hudson Bay. The "upper" prefix in the name reflects its geographic position along the Great Lakes, mostly above the headwaters of the Saint Lawrence River, contrasted with Lower Canada (present-day Quebec) to the northeast. Leeds County, Ontario
Leeds County is a historic county in the Canadian province of Ontario. The county was first surveyed in 1792 as one of the nineteen counties created by Sir John Graves Simcoe in preparation for the United Empire Loyalists to settle here. The county took its name from Francis Osborne, 5th Duke of Leeds; the "Leeds" of the Dukedom referred to Leeds in West Yorkshire, England and not for Leeds, Kent, England. In 1850, Leeds County merged with Grenville County to create the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville. This county was home to several townships as well as the city of Brockville. Hamilton Dibble Jessup
Hamilton Dibble Jessup (May 2, 1806 – November 24, 1892) was a doctor, militiaman, and political figure in Canada West. He came from the founding family of Prescott, Ontario. He was the son of Edward Jessup, Jr. and the grandson of Edward Jessup, a United Empire Loyalist. He studied medicine in Montreal and opened a practice in Prescott, Ontario. He served 10 terms as mayor of Prescott. Jessup first joined the Grenville Militia in 1829 as an Ensign eventually rising to Captain, and had commanded the Prescott Volunteer Battalion at the Battle of the Windmill in 1838. He raised and commanded the 1st Prescott Rifle Regiment in 1856 which later became the 56th Grenville Regiment of which was he Lieutenant-Colonel. He commanded the 56th Grenville Battalion during the Fenian Raids and was in command of Fort Wellington. He represented Grenville in the 2nd Parliament of the Province of Canada. Prescott, Ontario
Prescott, Ontario is a small town on the north shore of the Saint Lawrence River in the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville, Canada. In 2021, the town had a population of 4,078. The Ogdensburg–Prescott International Bridge, east of Prescott at Johnstown, connects the town with Ogdensburg, New York. The town is about an hour from both Ottawa and Kingston. The town was founded in the early 19th century by Edward Jessup, a Loyalist soldier during the American Revolution, who named the village after a former Governor-in-Chief, Robert Prescott. Before 1834, the town was a part of Augusta township; however, in that year the town became a police village and severed its ties with Augusta.
