Edward Hudson (dentist)
Edward Hudson (1743 – 4 October 1821) was an Irish dentist, born in Castlemartyr, County Cork, Ireland. Biography Hudson was an eminent dentist, at a time when dentistry was still very much a fledgling practice. He created a "Preservative and other Dentifrices" for the bettering of dental hygiene during his time as a dentist. Edward Hudson lived and practiced in Grafton Street, Dublin, and latterly lived at The Hermitage in Rathfarnham, Dublin (known in Edward's time as Fields of Odin, and subsequently as St. Enda's). This grand building on the outskirts of Dublin is now the home of the Pearse Museum, which celebrates the life of Patrick Pearse. During his time at ''The Hermitage'', Hudson built several ruins along the edge of the grounds, which remain to this day. The ruins were deliberately built as such from new, using rough stone to create the impression that they had existed for many years. Castlemartyr
Castlemartyr (, formerly anglicised as ''Ballymarter'' or ''Ballymartyr'') is a village in County Cork, Ireland. It is located 25 minutes east of Cork city, 10 km (6 mi) east of Midleton, 16 km (10 mi) west of Youghal and 6 km (4 mi) from the coast. Approximately 1,600 people live in the village and its hinterland. It is situated on the N25 national primary road and the R632 regional road. It is home to a number of community and sporting organisations, a 15th-century tower house (Castlemartyr Castle, now a ruin), and an 18th-century country house (Castlemartyr House, now a hotel). History Pre-history Traces of ancient civilisation, including from the Bronze Age, are to be found in the vicinity of Castlemartyr. Robert Blake (dentist)
Robert Blake (1772 – 25 March 1822) graduated from the Department of Physics at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, in September 1798, having trained to be a dentist for his uncle, Edward Hudson. Blake married Ann Higgins, daughter of the physician and chemist Dr. Bryan Higgins, on 25 November 1799, at St. James's Church, Piccadilly, London. Blake was for many years Secretary to the Physico-Medical Society of Dublin. He was the first State Dentist of Dublin, and had a large dental practice in the city. The Freeman's Journal reports Blake's death thus: Published works Blake's thesis, ''Disputatio medica inauguralis, de dentium formatione et structura in homine et in variis animalibus'', was first published in Edinburgh in September, 1798.
