Edward Howell, Gent. (1584–1655), born in Marsh Gibbon, Buckinghamshire, was an English Puritan who settled at Lynn, Massachusetts in 1635. He was known for the founding of Southampton, New York with Edward Howell, Edmond Farrington, Edmund Needham, Abraham Pierson the Elder, Thomas Sayre, Josiah Stanborough, George Welbe, Henry Walton, Job Sayre, and Thomas Halsey in 1639/40. Early life and immigration to New England Edward Howell was baptized on 26 July 1584 at Marsh Gibbon, Buckinghamshire, England. He was son of Henry Howell, Gent. and Margaret Hawten (Hawtayne) and heir to Westbury Manor. Howell and his family (see below) immigrated to Boston c. 1635, where they first settled at Lynn, Massachusetts, where they were one of the four largest landowners. In 1638, he sold Westbury Manor to Richard Francis. On 14 Mar 1638/39, he took the oath as Freeman in Boston, Massachusetts where he received 500 acres at Lynn. Edward Welsford Rowsell Howell (15 July 1902 – 20 August 1986), also known as pen name E.R. Howell, Edward Welsford Rowsell and Teddy/Ted Howell was a British Australian, character actor, radio and theatre producer, director and scriptwriter, theatre founder and drama teacher. He was notable for his career in Australia in all genres of the entertainment industry in a career spanning radio, stage, television and film. In 1927 he appeared in a cameo role in the early Australian film ''For the Term of his Natural Life'', at the time the highest-grossing film in Australian cinema. After this film, he moved to radio broadcasting and producing until reviving his screen career in the late 1950s, mainly appearing in made for TV Movies and serials. Edward Howell, FRAM (5 February 1846 – 1898) was a British cellist and music professor of the late 19th century. He studied cello at the Royal Academy of Music in London later becoming professor of cello at the Royal College of Music, the Royal Academy of Music and the Guildhall School of Music in London. Early life Edward Howell was born in St. Pancras, London, England in 1846. He studied cello at the Royal Academy of Music where he was taught by Piatti. Playing career Howell became a member of the Italian Opera Orchestra and from 1872 of the Covent Garden Theatre orchestra. He played regularly at festivals and concerts both in London and throughout the provinces becoming well known as a soloist and quartet player. He was a member of the Philharmonic Society and for many years principal cellist in its orchestra – holding the same position in the Leeds Festival orchestra from 1880; he was also principal cellist at the Three Choirs Festivals and in the Queen's Band. Edward Howell (October 16, 1792 – January 30, 1871) was an American educator, lawyer, and politician who served one term as a U.S. Representative from New York state from 1833 to 1835. Biography Born in Newburgh, New York, Howell attended the public schools. He moved to Sidney, New York, in 1808, and in the following year to Unadilla, New York, where he taught school. He moved to Bath, New York, in 1811. He was appointed postmaster of Bath December 30, 1817, and served until August 13, 1821. County clerk of Steuben County in 1818–1821. He studied law. He was admitted to the bar in 1823 and commenced practice in Bath. Political career He served as district attorney of Steuben County in 1829–1834. He served as member of the State assembly in 1832. Edward E. "Blue" Howell (1905 – April 15, 1964) was an American football player and coach. He was the fifth head football coach at Kansas State Teachers College of Pittsburg—now known as Pittsburg State University—in Pittsburg, Kansas, serving for eight seasons, from 1929 to 1935 and again in 1937, compiling a record of 35–30–6. Playing career Howell played college football at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln under head coach Ernest E. Bearg from 1926 until 1928. Weighing 185 pounds, he was the lightest member of the Cornhuskers but was considered one of the best fullbacks in the Big Six Conference. He was inducted into the program's "Hall of Fame" in 1978.
