Edward Austin Horton
Edward Austin Horton (1907-1980) was the first Mayor of Etobicoke, Ontario (1967-1972). He was previously deputy minister of municipal affairs and public welfare in Ontario (1937-1941) and later a business owner. After graduating from Harvard Business School with an MBA, he worked for Eastman Kodak in Rochester. He returned to Canada in 1935 to open a business handling claims from municipalities that had defaulted due to the Great Depression. In 1936, Ontario Premier Mitch Hepburn appointed him as an inspector in the Municipal Affairs Branch before promoting him to deputy minister of municipal affairs and public welfare in 1937. In 1939, he was also appointed Director of Unemployment Relief while continuing as deputy minister of municipal affairs. Horton left the provincial civil service in 1941 to join the federal government's Wartime Prices and Trade Board in Ottawa as director of the textiles division. The township of Etobicoke, Ontario came into existence in 1850 and was led by a township reeve from 1850 to 1967. John Palmer MacBeth
John Palmer MacBeth (November 19, 1921 – March 20, 1991) was a politician in Ontario, Canada. He was a Progressive Conservative member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1975 to 1981. He represented the ridings of York West and Humber in the west end of Toronto. He served as a cabinet minister in the government of Bill Davis. Background MacBeth was born in Toronto, the son of John Charles McKay MacBeth and Virginia Maria Palmer. MacBeth served in the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II from 1943 to 1945 on the corvette 'Orangeville' and attained the rank of Petty Officer. Christopher Dennis Flynn (according to Irish Civic Birth Registration, his name was Denis Christopher O'Flynn at birth) O.Ont, (December 17, 1923 – August 19, 2003) was Chairman of Metropolitan Toronto from 1984 to 1988. Etobicoke (, ) is an administrative district of, and one of six municipalities amalgamation of Toronto, amalgamated into, the city of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Comprising the city's west-end, Etobicoke was first settled by Europeans in the 1790s, and the municipality grew into city status in the 20th century. Several independent villages and towns developed and became part of Metropolitan Toronto in 1954. In 1998, its city status and government dissolved after it was amalgamated into present-day Toronto. Mitch Hepburn
Mitchell Frederick Hepburn (August 12, 1896 – January 5, 1953) was the 11th premier of Ontario, from 1934 to 1942. He was the youngest premier in Ontario history, appointed at age 37. He was the only Ontario Liberal Party leader in the 20th century to lead his party to two majorities. Early life Born in St. Thomas, Ontario, Hepburn attended school in Elgin County and hoped to become a lawyer. His formal education ended abruptly, however, when someone threw an apple at a visiting dignitary, Sir Adam Beck, and knocked his silk top hat off his head. Hepburn was accused of the deed and denied it but refused to identify the culprit. Refusing to apologize, he walked out of his high school and obtained a job as a bank clerk at the Canadian Bank of Commerce where he worked from 1913 to 1917.
