Edward is an English given name. It is derived from the Anglo-Saxon name ''Ēadweard'', composed of the elements '' ēad'' "wealth, fortune; prosperous" and '' weard'' "guardian, protector”. History The name Edward was very popular in Anglo-Saxon England, but the rule of the Norman and Plantagenet dynasties had effectively ended its use amongst the upper classes. The popularity of the name was revived when Henry III named his firstborn son, the future Edward I, as part of his efforts to promote a cult around Edward the Confessor, for whom Henry had a deep admiration. Variant forms The name has been adopted in the Iberian peninsula since the 15th century, due to Edward, King of Portugal, whose mother was English. Edward (ballad)
"Edward" is a traditional murder ballad existing in several variants, categorised by Francis James Child as Child Ballad number 13 and listed as number 200 in the Roud Folk Song Index. The ballad, which is at least 250 years old (a text of its Swedish counterpart has been dated to the mid-17th century), has been documented and recorded numerous times across the English speaking world into the twentieth century. Synopsis A mother questions her son about the blood on his "sword" (most likely a hunting knife, given the era when the story is occurring). He avoids her interrogation at first, claiming that it is his hawk or his horse (or some other kind of animal depending on the variation of the song), but finally admits that it is his brother, or his father, whom he has killed. He declares that he is leaving and will never return, and various creatures (wife, children, livestock) will have to fare without him. His mother then asks what she will get from his departure. ''Edward'' is an EP by the London singer-songwriter Emma-Lee Moss, better known as Emmy the Great, released on 10 August 2009 on the UK indie label Close Harbour Records. It is a collection of songs written before the release of her first album, ''First Love'', but not recorded in the album sessions. Moss wrote on her MySpace page that after playing these songs on tour, she was reminded of the joys of songwriting, and inspired to record the songs for a spontaneous release. Critical reception The EP was released with a copy of a short story written by Moss, entitled "The Wet and Windy Moors". and was generally well-received on release. Edward (mango)
The 'Edward' mango is a named mango cultivar that originated in south Florida. History During the early 20th century, Edward Simmonds was the head of the USDA's Plant Introduction Station in Miami, Florida. Due to the problems encountered with Indian-descended mango cultivars in Florida relating to their poor disease resistance and unreliable bearing habits, Simmonds began a mango breeding program in the 1920s where he sought to cross several cultivars of Indian descent with cultivars of southeast Asian origin. Simmonds' hope was to develop hybrid varieties that would take on the best characteristics of both parents, with color and flavor of the Indian line and the flavor and disease resistance of the southeast Asian mangoes. One of the results of the project was reportedly a Haden × Carabao (or Philippine-type mango) cross, grown on Simmonds private residence in Miami. Lake Edward
Lake Edward (locally Rwitanzigye or Rweru) is one of the smaller African Great Lakes. It is located in the Albertine Rift, the western branch of the East African Rift, on the border between the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda, with its northern shore a few kilometres south of the equator. History Henry Morton Stanley first saw the lake in 1888, during the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition. The lake was named in honour of Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, son of then British monarch Queen Victoria, and later to become King Edward VII. Rural Municipality Of Edward
The Rural Municipality of Edward is a former rural municipality (RM) in the Canadian province of Manitoba. It was originally incorporated as a rural municipality on December 1, 1905. It ceased on January 1, 2015 as a result of its provincially mandated amalgamation with the RM of Albert and the RM of Arthur to form the Municipality of Two Borders. The RM was located at the southwesternmost part of the province, bordering the province of Saskatchewan in Canada and the state of North Dakota in the United States. The population was 621 persons at the 2006 Census, a decline from 679 in the 2001 Census. It included the unincorporated communities of Pierson and Lyleton.
