Edwar Al-Kharrat
Edwar al-Kharrat ( ar, إدوار الخراط; 16 March 1926 – 1 December 2015) was an Egyptian novelist, writer and critic. Early life He was born in Alexandria to a Coptic Christian family. He studied law at Alexandria University and worked briefly in banking and insurance. He was also actively engaged in left-wing politics and spent two years in jail from 1948 to 1950. He moved to Cairo in the mid-1950s where he worked for a time as a translator at the Romanian embassy. Writing Al-Kharrat has been described as "one of Egypt's most influential fiction writers" and "one of the most important writers in the Arab world". He was a leading figure among the group of Egyptian writers known as the Sixties Generation, and founded and edited the literary journal ''Galerie 68'', considered to be the mouthpiece of that generation. John Verlenden
John Verlenden is an American academic, writer and award-winning translator of Arabic literature. He obtained a BA in English literature from Rhodes College in 1986 followed by an MFA in Creative Writing from Louisiana State University in 1988. He has taught at a number of universities in the USA and the Middle East, and currently works at the American University in Cairo. Paul Starkey
Paul Starkey is a British scholar and translator of Arabic literature. Life and career Starkey received his doctorate from Oxford University; the subject of his dissertation was the works of the Egyptian writer Tawfiq Hakim. He is emeritus professor of the Arabic department at the University of Durham and was also co-director of the Centre for Advanced Study of the Arab World (CASAW), a collaborative project by the Universities of Edinburgh, Durham and Manchester. Starkey is the author of ''Modern Arabic Literature'' (2006), a survey of the field. He has also edited a number of books, contributed book chapters, and written essays, scholarly articles and monographs. He is a specialist on the Sixties Generation of Egyptian writers, in particular Sonallah Ibrahim and Edwar al-Kharrat. Frances Liardet
Frances E. Liardet (born 10 December 1962) is a writer and translator of Arabic literature. She studied Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia. She has translated several book-length works, including two books by the modernist Egyptian writer Edwar al-Kharrat and one by Nobel Prize winner Naguib Mahfouz. Liardet's first novel, ''The Game'', was chosen as one of the winners of Betty Trask Award in 1994. Her second novel, ''We Must Be Brave'', was published in 2019. Rama and the dragon is a novel written by the author Edwar al-Kharrat and was published in 1980. After 16 years of its publishing, it became a trilogy with the publication of the second novel "The Other Time" and the third novel "The Certainty of Thirst" is considered a distinct style of autobiographical writing and one of the best 100 Arabic novels. The novel won the Naguib Mahfouz Medal for Literature. Plot The novel is told as a dialogue between a man and a woman and has Mythical, mythological, Pharaoh, Pharaonic, Greek language, Greek and Islamic elements mixed together. The Arab Writers Union (ar.: اتحاد الكتاب العرب) is an association of Arab writers, founded in 1969, in Damascus, Syria, at the initiative of a group of Arab writers including Syrian novelist Hanna Mina. In 2008, the union was moved from Damascus to Cairo and in 2015 to Abu Dhabi. Its current president is Dr. Muhammad Al-Hourani. In 2010, the Union published a list of the "100 Best Arabic novels," although the list in fact contained 105 entries.
