The Education (Schools) Act 1992 set up a system of school inspections by the Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills The Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills (Ofsted) is a Non-ministerial government department, non-ministerial department of Government of the United Kingdom, His Majesty's government, reporting to Parliament of the U ... Office For Standards In Education, Children's Services And Skills
The Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills (Ofsted) is a non-ministerial department of His Majesty's government, reporting to Parliament. Ofsted is responsible for inspecting a range of educational institutions, including state schools and some independent schools, in England. It also inspects childcare, adoption and fostering agencies and initial teacher training, and regulates a range of early years and children's social care services. The Chief Inspector (HMCI) is appointed by an Order in Council and thus becomes an office holder under the Crown. Amanda Spielman has been HMCI ; the Chair of Ofsted has been Christine Ryan: her predecessors include Julius Weinberg and David Hoare. Ofsted is also the colloquial name used in the education sector to refer to an Ofsted Inspection, or an Ofsted Inspection Report. Local government authorities are responsible for implementing policy for public education and state-funded schools at a local level.
