Eduardo Fernández (Argentine Politician)
Eduardo Gabriel Fernández (born 9 June 1952) is an Argentine public accountant and politician, who served as National Deputy representing Córdoba. A member of the Solidary Party (PSOL), Fernández was elected in 2019 for the Frente de Todos and finished his term in 2023. He presides the Córdoba chapter of the PSOL. Early life and education Fernández was born on 9 June 1952 in the City of Córdoba. He studied public accounting at the National University of Córdoba. Political career Fernández has done his political career in the Solidary Party (PSOL). In 2011, Fernández was the New Encounter candidate to the governorship of Córdoba Province; he garnered 0.93% of the vote and landed fifth in the election. At the 2017 legislative election, Fernández was the third candidate in the Córdoba Ciudadana alliance list, headed by Pablo Carro. The Chamber of Deputies ( es, Cámara de Diputados de la Nación), officially the Honorable Chamber of Deputies of the Argentine Nation, is the lower house of the Argentine National Congress ( es, Congreso de la Nación). It is made up of 257 national deputies who are elected in multi-member constituencies corresponding with the territories of the 23 provinces of Argentina (plus the Federal Capital) by party list proportional representation. Elections to the Chamber are held every two years, so that half of its members are up in each election, making it a rare example of staggered elections used in a lower house. Pablo Carro (born 29 March 1965) is an Argentine politician, professor, and trade unionist, currently serving as National Deputy elected in Córdoba. A member of the Justicialist Party, Carro was first elected in 2017 and re-elected in 2021. In addition, he served as secretary general of the University Professors and Researchers' Union of Córdoba (ADIUC) and secretary general of the Córdoba chapter of the Argentine Workers' Central Union. Early life and education Carro was born on 29 March 1965 in Buenos Aires. Elective Abortion in Argentina is legal in the first 14 weeks of gestation. The abortion law was liberalized after the Voluntary Interruption of Pregnancy Bill (Argentina) was passed by the National Congress in December 2020. According to the law, any woman can request the procedure at any public or private health facility. Doctors are legally bound to either perform it or, if they are conscientious objectors, refer the patient to another physician or health facility. Only four other Latin or South American countries have legalised abortion on request: Cuba in 1965, Guyana in 1995, Uruguay in 2012 and Colombia in 2022. Legislative elections were held in Argentina on 22 October 2017 to elect half of the Chamber of Deputies and one third of the Senate. The result was a victory for the ruling Cambiemos alliance, being the most voted force in 13 of the 24 districts.
