Edmund Britten Jones
Sir Edmund Britten Jones (8 October 1888 – 30 September 1953) was an Australian cricketer and rules footballer. Born in Adelaide, he was educated at Christian Brothers' College, Xavier College and the University of Adelaide before being awarded a Rhodes Scholarship at the University of Oxford in 1912. One of Adelaide's leading physicians, Jones received his knighthood in the New Year honours list in 1953, only months before his death. Jones held many important posts in the medical, world. He was a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and of the Royal Australian College of Physicians, and a leading member of the British Medical Association. He was medical secretary of the SA branch from 1927 to 1929, president in 1934/5 and SA representative on the Federal Council in 1937. He was a councillor of the Royal Australian College of Physicians in 1944. Adelaide ( ) is the capital city of South Australia, the state's largest city and the fifth-most populous city in Australia. Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a field at the centre of which is a pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two bails balanced on three stumps. The batting side scores runs by striking the ball bowled at one of the wickets with the bat and then running between the wickets, while the bowling and fielding side tries to prevent this (by preventing the ball from leaving the field, and getting the ball to either wicket) and dismiss each batter (so they are "out"). Means of dismissal include being bowled, when the ball hits the stumps and dislodges the bails, and by the fielding side either catching the ball after it is hit by the bat, but before it hits the ground, or hitting a wicket with the ball before a batter can cross the crease in front of the wicket.
