Edmonton Station (Via Rail)
Edmonton station (french: gare d'Edmonton; IATA: XZL) or Edmonton Train Station, is the main inter-city train station in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, operated by Via Rail. The railway station is located approximately 5.5 kilometres northwest of Downtown Edmonton on a spur off the Canadian National Railway near the former site of the Edmonton City Centre Airport. Served by Via Rail's ''The Canadian'', the station is unusually located on a branch off the main line, meaning that trains must either reverse into or out. The station opened in 1998 following the closure of the downtown Via Rail station which was located in the lower level of Edmonton's CN Tower. Via Rail Canada Inc. (), operating as Via Rail or Via, is a Canadian Crown corporation that is mandated to operate intercity passenger rail service in Canada. It receives an annual subsidy from Transport Canada to offset the cost of operating services connecting remote communities. Via Rail operates over 500 trains per week across eight Canadian provinces and of track, 97 per cent of which is owned and maintained by other railway companies, mostly by Canadian National Railway (CN). Kingsway, sometimes called Kingsway Avenue, is an arterial road in central Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, that runs on a northwest to southeast path, cutting through the city's normal street grid, grid pattern. Edmonton Light Rail Transit, commonly referred to as the LRT, is a light rail system in Edmonton, Alberta. Part of the Edmonton Transit Service (ETS), the system has 18 stations on two lines and of track. Fort Road is a discontinuous street in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Historically it was a major route in connecting Edmonton and Fort Saskatchewan. It was formed on the west side of the Canadian National Railway line that formerly connected the two cities, and crossed the North Saskatchewan River just south of the current Highway 15 bridge. As the city of Edmonton expanded its grid street system, and realigned the highway to Manning Drive, portions of Fort Road ceased to exist.
