Edmond J. Muniz
Edmond J. Muniz (February 10, 1940 – May 20, 2023) was an American politician who served as mayor of Kenner, Louisiana. He was first elected in July 2006 to succeed former mayor, Phil Capitano. He was also the founder and Captain of the Krewe of Endymion, which annually hosts the largest parade and party of the New Orleans Mardi Gras season. Political career Edmond J. Muniz was serving his first term as mayor of the city of Kenner, Louisiana — a municipality of 75,000 in the northwest corner of Jefferson Parish. Having served on the Jefferson Parish Council from 1987 through 2003, he came out of political retirement to run for mayor and posted a decisive win in the April 29, 2006, runoff election. While a parish councilman, he was re-elected twice without opposition and two other times with large vote margins. Kenner, Louisiana
Kenner (historically french: Cannes-Brûlées) is a city in Louisiana, United States. It is the largest city in Jefferson Parish, and is the largest incorporated suburban city of New Orleans. The population was 66,448 at the 2020 census. History Originally inhabited by the Tchoupitoulas Indians, the area along the Mississippi River was the first land in the New Orleans metropolitan area on which Europeans set foot. René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle landed there in 1682. In 1855, Kenner was founded by Minor Kenner on land that consisted of three plantation properties that had been purchased by the Kenner family. At the time, all land north of what is now Airline Highway was swampland. Krewe Of Endymion
The Krewe of Endymion is a New Orleans Mardi Gras super krewe and social organization. History and formation The Krewe of Endymion is one of only three Super Krewes (using floats and celebrity Grand Marshals), and is the largest of the parades participating in the New Orleans Mardi Gras. Many people begin saving their viewing spots for this parade several days before the parade actually rolls, although spot-saving is widely frowned upon and is discouraged. It was founded in 1966 and named after Endymion , from Greek mythology. The first ball was held in 1968. New Orleans Mardi Gras
The holiday of Mardi Gras is celebrated in all of Louisiana, including the city of New Orleans. Celebrations are concentrated for about two weeks before and through Shrove Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday (the start of lent in the Western Christian tradition). Usually there is one major parade each day (weather permitting); many days have several large parades. The largest and most elaborate parades take place the last five days of the Mardi Gras season.
