Edenville, Michigan
Edenville is a small unincorporated community in Edenville Township, Midland County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The community is in the northeast corner of the township near the boundary with Gladwin County, but the settlement is mostly within Midland County. It is on M-30, about 15 miles northwest of Midland. Edenville is situated on the east side of the Tittabawassee River, opposite the point where the Tobacco River flows into the Tittabawassee. The Edenville Dam is less than a mile north and blocks the flow of both rivers to form Wixom Lake. The dam and Wixom Lake are almost entirely within Gladwin County. Settlement has extended northward from Edenville along M-30 and the Tobacco River shores of the lake which is sometimes associated with Edenville, although it is actually part of Tobacco Township. Gladwin County, Michigan
Gladwin County is a county located in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2020 Census, the population was 25,386. The county seat is Gladwin. History Prehistory Gladwin County is a headwaters area. Most of the water that flows out of the county via the Tittabawassee River comes from Gladwin County, only a very small portion flows in from Clare or Roscommon counties. Native Americans crossed this area, and even spent summers here where the fishing was good and summer berries plentiful. Research is underway to determine the importance of an ancient trail that was noted by the crew of the 1839 re-survey of Township 17 north Range 2 west, which later became Beaverton Township. The eastern terminus of the "Muskegon River Trail" was plotted at the confluence of the three branches of the Tobacco (Assa-mo-quoi-Sepe) River in the northwest corner of Section 12. Sanford, Michigan
Sanford is a village in Midland County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 859 at the 2010 census. The village is located within Jerome Township. History In 1864, Charles Sanford, of Madison County, New York, purchased of land where the village is now located, along with of pine land. The site was first known as the "Salt-Spring Reserve", and was the location of the first salt well in the state. Douglass Houghton, the state surveyor and geologist, supervised sinking the shaft of the well. Charles Sanford moved there in May 1864. He platted the village in 1870. Romig identifies Jay F. Hamilton as the first postmaster of ''Sanfordville'' on June 23, 1871, while the ''Portrait and biographical album of Midland county, Mich.'' lists Phineas Hamilton as the first postmaster. Public Land Survey System
The Public Land Survey System (PLSS) is the surveying method developed and used in the United States to plat, or divide, real property for sale and settling. Also known as the Rectangular Survey System, it was created by the Land Ordinance of 1785 to survey land ceded to the United States by the Treaty of Paris in 1783, following the end of the American Revolution. Beginning with the Seven Ranges in present-day Ohio, the PLSS has been used as the primary survey method in the United States. Following the passage of the Northwest Ordinance in 1787, the Surveyor General of the Northwest Territory platted lands in the Northwest Territory. Michigan Meridian
The Michigan meridian is the principal meridian (or north-south line) used as a reference in the Michigan Survey, the survey of the U.S. state of Michigan in the early 19th century. It is located at 84 degrees, 21 minutes and 53 seconds west longitude at its northern terminus at Sault Ste. Marie, and varies very little from that line down the length of the state. Tobacco Township, Michigan
Tobacco Township is a civil township of Gladwin County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 2,566 at the 2010 census. Communities * Beaverton was partially located in the northwestern portion of the township but became autonomous when it incorporated as a city in 1903. *Dale is a former community that was settled in 1895 and also had its own post office. Edenville Dam was an earthen embankment dam at the confluence of the Tittabawassee River and the Tobacco River in Mid Michigan, United States, forming Wixom Lake. The dam was about north of Edenville, mostly in the southeast corner of Tobacco Township in Gladwin County, with its southeastern end reaching into Edenville Township in Midland County. Tittabawassee River
The Tittabawassee River flows in a generally southeasterly direction through the Lower Peninsula of the U.S. state of Michigan. The river begins at Secord Lake in Clement Township, at the confluence of the East Branch and the Middle Branch. From there it flows through Gladwin, Midland and Saginaw counties where, as a major tributary of the Saginaw River, it flows into it at Saginaw. Midland, Michigan
Midland is a city in and the county seat of Midland County, Michigan. The city's population was 42,547 as of the 2020 census. It is the principal city of the Midland Micropolitan Statistical Area, part of the larger Saginaw-Midland-Bay City Combined Statistical Area. M-30 (Michigan Highway)
M-30 is a state trunkline highway in the U.S. state of Michigan that runs in a north–south direction from the Midland area to West Branch. The highway runs through rural parts of three counties in the Lower Peninsula. The southern end runs along the Michigan Meridian and parallel to the Tittabawassee River. Prior to 1962, M-30's southern terminus was at a junction with M-46 in Merrill. Since then, the segment south of US Highway 10 (US 10) was returned to local control and decommissioned.
