Edenderry GAA
Edenderry GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in Edenderry, County Offaly, Ireland. It participates in competitions organised by the Offaly GAA county board. The club fields both Gaelic football and hurling teams. Paul O'Kelly, who was a selector under Tommy Lyons when the Offaly county team won the 1997 Leinster Senior Football Championship and the 1997–98 National Football League, is from the Edenderry club. O'Kelly later served as manager of the county team himself. Edenderry
Edenderry (; ) is a town in east County Offaly, Ireland. It is near the borders with Counties Kildare, Meath and Westmeath. The Grand Canal runs along the south of Edenderry, through the Bog of Allen, and there is a short spur to the town centre. The R401 road from Kinnegad to the north and the R402 from Enfield to the east meet at the northeastern end of the Main Street. At the Grand Canal they split, with the R402 continuing westwards towards Tullamore and the R401 heads south to Rathangan and Kildare Town. History In the 16th century, Edenderry was known as Coolestown, after the family of Cooley or Cowley, who had a castle here. Finbarr Cullen
Finbarr Cullen was a Gaelic footballer from County Offaly, Ireland. He played with the Offaly intercounty team from 1991 to 2000. He was captain of the Offaly team that won the Leinster Senior Football Championship in 1997 and the National Football League in 1998. He was also a noted hurler winning Leinster and All-Ireland Minor Hurling Championships in 1989. The ''Offaly Express'' is an online newspaper and former print newspaper in Ireland that serves County Offaly. The paper is part of the Iconic Newspapers Group. The offices of the ''Offaly Express'' are based in Portlaoise. The paper was founded in 1984. Justin Kelly is editor of the ''Offaly Express''. In June 2012, it was announced that Johnston Press Ireland were to close the ''Offaly Express'' print newspaper version with the loss of 8 jobs. The final edition was published on 5 July 2012 after 29 years. The paper was published on a weekly basis every Wednesday and accepted submissions via e-mail including articles and pictures relevant to the county. The Offaly Junior A Hurling Championship is an annual hurling competition contested by lower-tier Offaly GAA clubs. The Offaly County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association has organised it since 1907. The national media covers the competition. History The junior championship dates back to 1907. It was the second hurling championship to be established in Ofaly, and was originally seen as a second tier championship for teams that were too weak for the senior hurling championships. Kinnitty defeated Kilcormac–Killoughey in the 2020 championship decider, played in the summer of 2021 due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Gaelic games. The Offaly Intermediate Hurling Championship is an annual hurling competition contested by mid-tier Offaly GAA clubs. The Offaly County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association has organised it since 1929. The national media covers the competition. Shamrocks are the title holders (2022) defeating Seir Kieran in the Final, after a replay. History The intermediate championship dates back to 1929. It was the third hurling championship to be established in Ofaly, and was seen as a stepping stone between the senior and junior hurling championships. The Offaly Senior Hurling Championship (known for sponsorship reasons as the Molloy Environmental Senior Hurling Championship) is an annual hurling competition contested by top-tier Offaly GAA clubs. The Offaly County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association has organised it since 1896. Shinrone are the title holders (2022) defeating Kilcormac–Killoughey in the Final. Seán Foran
Seán Foran (1931 – 9 July 2015) was an Irish Gaelic footballer who played as a midfielder for the Offaly senior team. Born in Edenderry, County Offaly, Foran first played competitive Gaelic football during his schooling at St. Mary's Knockbeg College. He arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of seventeen when he first linked up with the Offaly minor team. He made his senior debut during the 1949 championship. Foran immediately became a regular member of the starting fifteen and won one Leinster medal. As a member of the Leinster inter-provincial team on a number of occasions, Foran won one Railway Cup medal. At club level he was a three-time championship medallist with Edenderry. Throughout his career Foran made 24 championship appearances. He retired from inter-county football during the 1963-64 league. Cillian Farrell
Cillian Farrell (born 1977 in Edenderry, County Offaly, Ireland) is an Irish hurling manager and former dual player. He is the former manager of the Meath senior hurling team. A dual player at the highest levels, Farrell had a successful playing career at club level with Edenderry and at inter-county levels with Offaly.
