Eddyville, Oregon
Eddyville is an unincorporated community in Lincoln County, in the U.S. state of Oregon. Eddyville's unofficial estimated population as of 2014 was about 400 to 500. Eddyville lies at the intersection of U.S. Route 20 and Oregon Route 180 east of Chitwood and at the confluence of Little Elk Creek and the Yaquina River. The community was named by and for Israel F. Eddy, who was postmaster here in 1888. The post office, originally established in 1868, had been called "Little Elk", for the nearby creek, until Eddy moved it further from the creek and renamed it. Subsequent back-and-forth moves and name changes through 1900 resulted in a post office near the mouth of the creek but with the name "Eddyville". In the late 19th century, Eddyville was one of the stops on the Oregon Pacific Railroad, linking the former port city of Yaquina to Corvallis and Albany. Yaquina River
The Yaquina River ( ) is a stream, long, on the Pacific coast of the U.S. state of Oregon. It drains an area of the Central Oregon Coast Range west of the Willamette Valley near Newport. It rises in the mountains west of Corvallis along the county line between Benton and Lincoln counties. It flows south, then generally west, in a highly serpentine course, past Eddyville, Chitwood, Toledo, and Elk City, and enters the Pacific in Yaquina Bay, a broad estuary at Newport. When sea level was lower than today, the Yaquina River reached to Stonewall Bank, which is split by a rocky channel. U.S. Route 20, the Corvallis–Newport highway, follows the river from Eddyville, at the confluence of the river with Little Elk Creek, to slightly downstream of Chitwood. Southern Pacific Transportation Company
The Southern Pacific (or Espee from the railroad initials- SP) was an American Class I railroad network that existed from 1865 to 1996 and operated largely in the Western United States. Chitwood, Oregon
Chitwood is an unincorporated community in Lincoln County, Oregon, United States. Chitwood lies on U.S. Route 20 between Toledo to the west and Eddyville to the east. The Yaquina River flows through Chitwood. Historically, Chitwood was a station on the railway line between Corvallis and Toledo. It was named for Joshua Chitwood, who lived nearby during construction of the railway, 1881–85. The line was originally known as the Yaquina Route of the Oregon Pacific Railroad, linking the former port city of Yaquina to Corvallis and Albany.
