Eddie Townsend
Edward "Eddie" Townsend (October 5, 1914 – February 1, 1988) was an American professional boxing trainer. He is revered in Japan for training several boxing world champions. An award given to boxing trainers was established in his honor and a boxing gym in Osaka, bears his name. Biography Townsend was born to a Japanese mother and an American father in Honolulu, Territory of Hawaii. His mother lived in Yamaguchi Prefecture, before immigrating to the United States and his father worked as a lawyer. He began boxing at age 14 and was undefeated in 12 fights as a professional, before losing his 13th bout the day before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor (December 6, 1941). Townsend's American friends quickly deserted him after learning that he was half Japanese and Townsend decided to end his professional career to become a trainer. Tadashi Tomori
__NOTOC__ is a retired Japanese boxer who is a former WBC junior flyweight champion. Tomori won the Japan's inter-high school championship in the 45 kg class in 1977, and compiled an amateur record of 16–4 (3 KOs) before turning professional. Hitoshi Misako who is the president of Misako Boxing Gym in Tokyo went to Okinawa, and encouraged Tomori to turn professional. After joining that gym in 1978, he made his professional debut at the Korakuen Hall in May of that year. In March 1979, Tomori won the annual Japanese boxing series, All-Japan Rookie King Tournament in the junior flyweight division. Although he lost on points to Kazunori Tenryū in the Japanese junior flyweight title bout in November 1979, he knocked out the sixteen-time defending champion Tenryū in the first round of the return match in February 1980 to capture the title. Guts Ishimatsu
, better known as is a Japanese actor, comedian, tarento and former professional boxer who competed in the Lightweight division from 1966 to 1978. He is a one-time former WBC Lightweight Champion and an OPBF Lightweight Champion. As a boxer, he was known for his unpredictable style, sometimes marking completely unexpected victories, and often losing in extravagant fashion as well. He lost 14 of his 51 professional fights, a rather large number of losses for a world champion. Since retiring in the late 70’s, he has gained popularity as an entertainer. Kuniaki Shibata
Kuniaki Shibata (柴田 国明, born March 29, 1947, in Hitachi, Japan) is a Japanese former professional boxer who competed from 1965 to 1977. He is a world champion in two weight classes, having held the WBC and ''The Ring featherweight titles from 1970 to 1972, the WBA and ''The Ring'' super-featherweight titles in 1973, and the WBC super-featherweight title from 1974 to 1975. Biography Shibata won his debut match in 1965 with a first-round knockout, and fought for the Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation featherweight title in 1969, but lost by sixth-round knockout. In April 1970 he challenged for the vacant Japanese featherweight title, and won by tenth-round knockout. He relinquished the title to challenge WBC featherweight champion Vicente Saldivar, and won the title when Saldivar gave up after the twelfth round. Hiroyuki Ebihara
was a Japanese former professional boxer who competed from 1959 to 1969. He held the WBA, WBC, and '' The Ring'' flyweight titles from 1963 to 1964 and the WBA flyweight title again in 1969. Cancer
Cancer is a group of diseases involving abnormal cell growth with the potential to invade or spread to other parts of the body. These contrast with benign tumors, which do not spread. The World Boxing Council (WBC) is an international professional boxing organization.
