''Eddie Murphy'' is the self-titled debut solo album by Eddie Murphy. It was released in late 1982, on Columbia Records. It was certified as a Gold record and received a Grammy award nomination. The album drew ire from the gay community, Asian-American groups and Women's groups for some of the humor. In terms of material, the release draws upon Murphy's work on the program '' Saturday Night Live''. The recording took place from April 30, 1982 to May 1, 1982, capturing some of Murphy's routines at the New York City venue The Comic Strip. In addition to the comedy tracks, the album contained several songs, including the parody hip-hop song "Boogie in Your Butt", which became a minor hit on the R&B charts. Critical reception Reviewing the album for AllMusic, critic Bret Adams wrote, "Despite Murphy's gifts, his first standup comedy album, 1982's ''Eddie Murphy'', is uneven despite containing some classic routines." Edward Regan Murphy (born April 3, 1961) is an American actor, comedian, writer, producer, and singer. He rose to fame on the sketch comedy show ''Saturday Night Live'', for which he was a regular cast member from 1980 to 1984. Murphy has also worked as a stand-up comedian and is ranked No. 10 on Comedy Central's list of the 100 Greatest Stand-ups of All Time. Paul Jabara, also known as Paul Frederick Jabara, (January 31, 1948 – September 29, 1992) was an American actor, singer, and songwriter of Lebanese ancestry, born in Brooklyn, New York. He wrote Donna Summer's Oscar-winning " Last Dance" from '' Thank God It's Friday'' (1978) as well as "No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)" her international hit duet with Barbra Streisand. "No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)" is a 1979 song recorded by American singers Barbra Streisand and Donna Summer. It was written by Paul Jabara and Bruce Roberts, and produced by Giorgio Moroder and Gary Klein. The song was recorded for Streisand's '' Wet'' album and also as a new track for Summer's compilation double album '' On the Radio: Greatest Hits Volumes I & II''. The full-length version was found on Streisand's album, while a longer 11-minute edit (the 12" version) was featured on Summer's album. The longer 12" version features additional production by frequent collaborator Harold Faltermeyer, and incorporates a harder rock edge. The single was released on both Casablanca Records (Summer's label) and Columbia Records (Streisand's label) and sales of the two were amalgamated. The Comic Strip Live is the oldest stand-up comedy showcase club in New York City, located at 1568 Second Avenue (between 81st and 82nd Streets). History The Comic Strip was opened in 1976.
