Ed Cummings (American Football)
Edward Arthur Cummings (born June 29, 1941 – September 25, 2020) was an American football linebacker in the American Football League. He played college football at Stanford. Collegiate career Cummings was a two-way player for the Stanford Cardinal as a fullback and as a linebacker. He led the Cardinal in tackles in his junior and senior seasons and was named a third-team All-American at fullback as a senior. Cummings was inducted into Stanford's Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005. Professional career Cummings was tried out for the New York Giants and was invited to training camp, but was cut before the start of the 1963 season after injuring his shoulder. After being cut he enrolled in the Columbia University School of Social Work and finished his degree in the following offseason. Linebacker
Linebacker (LB) is a playing position in gridiron football. Linebackers are members of the defensive team, and line up three to five yards behind the line of scrimmage and the defensive linemen. They are the "middle ground" of defenders, playing closer to the line of scrimmage than the defensive backs (secondary), but farther back than the defensive linemen. As such, linebackers play a hybrid role and are often the most versatile players on the defensive side of the ball; they can be asked to play roles similar to either a defensive lineman (such as stopping the runner on a running play) or a defensive back (such as dropping back into pass coverage). Joe Edward Cummings (born June 8, 1974) is a former American football linebacker in the National Football League. He played college football at Wyoming. Early life and high school Cummings was born in Missoula, Montana and grew up in Stevensville, Montana. He attended Stevensville High School and was named the Montana Gatorade Player of the Year as a senior. College career Cummings was a three year starter for the Wyoming Cowboys. As a senior, he recorded eight sacks and 10 tackles for loss and was named first-team All-Western Athletic Conference. Professional career Following the 1996 NFL Draft, Cummings was signed by the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted free agent on April 26, 1996 but was cut during training camp.
