Ed Albosta
Edward John Albosta (October 27, 1918 – January 7, 2003), nicknamed "Rube", was a pitcher in Major League Baseball. He pitched for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1941 and the Pittsburgh Pirates The Pittsburgh Pirates are an American professional baseball team based in Pittsburgh. The Pirates compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the National League (NL) Central division. Founded as part of the American Associati ... in 1946. In between he served three years in the U.S. Army during World War II. He played semi-pro ball after that, retiring in 1954. His best record was in 1951 when he went 19–11 for Saginaw. Albosta died January 7, 2003. In baseball, the pitcher is the player who throws ("pitches") the baseball from the pitcher's mound toward the catcher to begin each play, with the goal of retiring a batter, who attempts to either make contact with the pitched ball or draw a walk. In the numbering system used to record defensive plays, the pitcher is assigned the number 1. The pitcher is often considered the most important player on the defensive side of the game, and as such is situated at the right end of the defensive spectrum.
