Ecover Sailing Team
The Ecover Sailing team competed in the 2009 iShares Cup, showcasing world class racing around Europe. The races take place in Venice, Hyères, Cowes, Kiel, Amsterdam and Almeria, and the rebranded, 2010 Extreme Sailing Series. Sponsors Ecover, the world's leading manufacturer of ecological cleaning and washing products, have sponsored skipper Mike Golding for more than eight years, as he has competed in the Vendée Globe, and World Championships. The Team Mike Golding Mike was IMOCA world champion for two successive years, and is the only British sailor to hold this sought-after title. Mike Golding
Mike Golding (born 27 August 1960) is an English yachtsman, born in Great Yarmouth and educated at Reading Blue Coat School. He is one of the few yachtsmen to have raced round the world non stop in both directions. He held the solo record for sailing round the world westabout (the most challenging direction for circumnavigation) between 1994 and 2000. Golding, who was named president of the Little Ship Club in 2017 and is a member of Royal Southampton Yacht Club, is the eponymous co founder of the commercial company Mike Golding Yacht Racing Ltd. His partner in this venture was Jorgen Philip-Sorensen (d.2010). Golding led the team ''Group 4'' to second place in the British Steel Challenge in 1992–3. Ecover
Ecover is a Belgian company that manufactures ecologically sound cleaning products (made from plant-based and mineral ingredients), owned by S. C. Johnson & Son since 2017. History The company was founded in 1979 by Frans Bogaerts to create phosphate-free cleaning products to reduce the environmental impact of cleaning agents. Following expansion to support sales through supermarkets, it ran into financial difficulties during the early 1990s. The business was sold to Bogaerts' son and rescued by Gunter Pauli, a member of the company's board since 1990. Pauli, in turn, enlisted in 1992 the financial clout of now-deceased Danish investor, Jørgen Philip-Sørensen, through the private investment company Skagen. 2010 Extreme Sailing Series
The 2010 Extreme Sailing Series is the fourth edition of the sailing series. This is the first year without iShares as a sponsor. The 2010 series started in Sète, France on 27 May 2010 and ended in Almeria, Spain on 12 October 2010 and took place in 5 cities. Acts Act 1: Sète, France The first act of the series was held in Sète, France between 27 and 30 May 2010. Act 2: Cowes, UK The second act of the series was held again in Cowes, UK again. Vendée Globe
--> The Vendée Globe is a single-handed (solo) non-stop round the world yacht race. The race was founded by Philippe Jeantot in 1989, and since 1992 has taken place every four years. It is named after the Département of Vendée, in France, where the race starts and ends. The Vendée Globe is considered an extreme quest of individual endurance and the ultimate test in ocean racing. Extreme 40
The Extreme 40 is a class of sailing catamaran created by TornadoSport and designed by Yves Loday. The boats are 40 feet long and are constructed out of carbon fibre. They have a top speed of about and can sail at about in 20–25 knots of wind The first extreme 40 was launched in 2005. IMOCA 60
The IMOCA ("Open 60"), is a 60ft development class monohull sailing yacht administered by the International Monohull Open Class Association (IMOCA). The class pinnacle event are single or two person ocean races, such as the Route du Rhum and the Vendée Globe and this has been intimately linked to design development within the class. Class description This class is of "open" design, this means the boat is measurement controlled and therefore designers have freedom within the rules. Design restrictions include the length (between 59 and ) and maximum draft (). There are no explicit restrictions on beam, mast height or sail area although these are all indirectly controlled by flotation and self-righting capability requirements. Volvo Ocean Race
The Ocean Race is a yacht race around the world, held every three or four years since 1973. Originally named the Whitbread Round the World Race after its initiating sponsor, British brewing company Whitbread, in 2001 it became the Volvo Ocean Race after Swedish automobile manufacturer Volvo took up the sponsorship, and in 2019 it was renamed The Ocean Race. Though the route changes to accommodate various ports of call, the race typically departs Europe in October, and in recent editions has had either 9 or 10 legs, with in-port races at many of the stopover cities. Iwan Thomas
Iwan Gwyn Thomas (born 5 January 1974) is a Welsh sprinter who represented Great Britain and Northern Ireland at the Olympic Games in the 400 metres, and Wales at the Commonwealth Games. Thomas is a former European, Commonwealth Games and World (4 × 400 m relay) champion. Thomas is the former UK 400m record holder, with his time of 44.36s set in Birmingham on 13 July 1997 standing until Matthew Hudson-Smith broke the record in May 2022. He was also a member of the team which holds the UK 4 × 400 m Relay record of 2:56.60, set in Atlanta, USA in the Olympic final on 3 August 1996. Ben Fogle
Benjamin Myer Fogle, (born 3 November 1973) is an English broadcaster, writer and adventurer, best known for his presenting roles with British television channels Channel 5, BBC and ITV. Early life Fogle is the son of English actress Julia Foster and Canadian veterinarian Bruce Fogle. He was educated at two independent schools: The Hall School, Hampstead in London, and Bryanston School in Blandford Forum, Dorset. Fogle went to Ecuador for a gap year, working in an orphanage teaching English. He then took a second year working on a turtle conservation project on the Mosquito Coast of Honduras and Nicaragua. Fogle studied for a degree in Latin American studies at the University of Portsmouth, before studying for a year at the University of Costa Rica.
