Ebenezer Augustus Kwasi Akuoko
Ebenezer Augustus Kwasi Akuoko (1928 – 2021) was a Ghanaian lawyer and politician. He was the Member of parliament for Mampong North in the Third Republic of Ghana. He became a member of parliament following a by-election due to the execution by firing squad of Afrifa and other senior military officers on 26 June 1979. Afrifa had won the seat in the 1979 Ghanaian general election but never got to take his seat in parliament. His execution followed a coup d'état on 4 June 1979 which led to the formation of the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council military government. He was married to Sophia Nana Wiba Sackey with whom he had two daughters, Anastasia and Felicia. She died after a short illness in October 2019. Akuoko died in October 2021 aged 93. He had thirteen children. Akwasi Afrifa
Lieutenant General Akwasi Amankwaa Afrifa Born (24 April 1936 – 26 June 1979) was a Ghanaian soldier, farmer, traditional ruler and politician. He was the head of state of Ghana and leader of the military government in 1969 and then chairman of the Presidential Commission between 1969 and 1970. He continued as a farmer and political activist. He was elected a member of Parliament in 1979, but he was executed before he could take his seat. He was executed together with two other former heads of state, General Kutu Acheampong and General Fred Akuffo, and five other generals (Utuka, Felli, Boakye, Robert Kotei and Amedume), in June 1979. He was also popularly referred to by his title ''Okatakyie'' Akwasi Amankwaa Afrifa and was in addition the ''abakomahene'' of Krobo in the Asante-Mampong Traditional Area of the Ashanti Region of Ghana. 1979 Ghanaian General Election
General elections were held in Ghana on 18 June 1979, with a second round of the presidential election on 9 July 1979. The presidential election resulted in victory for Hilla Limann of the People's National Party, who received 62% of the votes in the run-off,Dieter Nohlen, Michael Krennerich & Bernhard Thibaut (1999) ''Elections in Africa: A data handbook'', p438 whilst his PNP won 71 of the 140 seats in Parliament. According to one scholar, the elections were conducted "in as free and fair a manner as might be considered humanly possible under local conditions" and the losing candidates publicly accepted defeat. Around 5,070,000 people were registered to vote. The Electoral Commissioner during the elections was Joseph Kingsley-Nyinah, an Appeal Court Judge who was appointed by the Supreme Military Council (SMC). The Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC) was the government of Ghana from June 4, 1979, to September 24, 1979. 4 June military coup The AFRC came to power in a coup that removed the Supreme Military Council, Ghana, Supreme Military Council, another military regime, from power. The June 4 coup was preceded by an abortive attempt on May 15, 1979, when Flt. Lt. Jerry Rawlings and other ranks were arrested. Their trial only served to make them popular till they were eventually released on the morning of June 4 by young officers and noncommissioned officers inspired by Rawlings. During the fighting that ensued throughout the day, a number of military personnel lost their lives. These include Neville Odartey-Welllington, Major General Odartey-Welllington who led the government's resistance to the coup d'état.
