The Eastern Districts Football League is an Australian rules football league based in the eastern Wheatbelt (Western Australia), Wheatbelt region of Western Australia. The league stretches from Southern Cross, Western Australia, Southern Cross in the east, Hyden, Western Australia, Hyden in the south, Corrigin, Western Australia, Corrigin in the west and Merredin, Western Australia, Nukarni in the north. History The Eastern Districts Football League (EDFL) was formed in 1960 after a merger of the Merredin Football Association (MFA) and the Bruce Rock-Narembeen Football Association (BRNFA). Teams from the MFA included Baandee, Burracoppin, Muntagdin, Nukarni, Merredin Railways and Merredin Towns. Teams from the BRNFA included Bruce Rock, Narembeen Rovers, Narembeen Warriors and Shackleton. In 1963, the two Narembeen clubs – Rovers and Warriors – merged to form a single Narembeen club. Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. Points are scored by kicking the oval ball between the central goal posts (worth six points), or between a central and outer post (worth one point, otherwise known as a "behind"). During general play, players may position themselves anywhere on the field and use any part of their bodies to move the ball. The primary methods are kicking, handballing and running with the ball. Karlgarin, Western Australia
Karlgarin is a town located south-east of Perth in the eastern Wheatbelt (Western Australia), Wheatbelt region of Western Australia. A small traditional farming town, in 2010 Karlgarin made national papers, as the poorest town in Western Australia, with an average of $34,054 taxable income. The first European to visit the area was Surveying, Surveyor General John Septimus Roe, who passed through in 1848. He recorded the name "Carlgarin" as the name of a nearby hill. the town name, Karlgarin, was derived from the Noongar language, Noongar word, karl, meaning fire. Karlgarin was selected as a soldier settlement site and a declaration of a townsite was sought in 1924. It was not until 1930 that the railway came to the area. The townsite was gazetted in 1931. Muntadgin, Western Australia
Muntadgin is a townsite off the Great Eastern Highway on Brissenden Road, situated between the towns of Bruce Rock and Southern Cross in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia. At the 2016 census, Muntadgin had a population of 51. Originating as a railway siding on the Narembeen to Merredin line, the location was thought by the district surveyor to be ideal for a townsite. The townsite was surveyed and gazetted in 1925. A hotel licence was granted in 1931 to Colin Geoffrey Elliott to run the hotel that had recently been constructed in the town. The name is Aboriginal in origin and is taken from the nearby Muntadgin Soak, which first appeared on maps of the area in 1912. Currently the town still has a wheat siding, the Muntadgin hotel that provides meals and accommodation, and recreation facilities, including a golf course. Baandee is a small town located in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, about halfway between the towns of Kellerberrin and Merredin on the Great Eastern Highway, approximately from Perth, the state capital. Narembeen, Western Australia
Narembeen is a town in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia. It is 286 km, almost due east, from Perth, the capital of WA. It is the major settlement in the Shire of Narembeen, in which the major industries are growing cereal crops and raising cattle and sheep. The surrounding areas produce wheat and other cereal crops. The town is a receival site for Cooperative Bulk Handling. Narembeen means ''place of female emus'' in the local Aboriginal language. History The area was initially surveyed in 1836 by the Surveyor General John Septimus Roe. After camping on a rocky outcrop and seeing a group of emus he named the area Emu Hill. By the 1850s, European settlers arrived in the area looking for pastoral land for wheat and grazing. Sandalwood cutters also frequented the area during this time.
