Eastern Association (baseball)
The Eastern Association was a minor league baseball league. The first version of the league appeared in 1882, followed by similar one season leagues in 1891 and 1909 with teams in Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island. The league was a Class B level league in the 1913 and 1914 seasons, with teams based in Connecticut and Massachusetts. History The 1891 Eastern Association played as a Class A level league and the president was Charles D. White. the 1891 league members were the Albany Senators, Buffalo Bisons, Lebanon Cedars, New Haven Nutmegs, Providence Clamdiggers, Rochester Hop Bitters, Syracuse Stars and Troy Trojans. In 1909, the Eastern Association played for eleven days before folding under league president Jim Paige. Connecticut League
The Connecticut League, also known as the Connecticut State League, was a professional baseball association of teams in the state of Connecticut. The league began as offshoot of the original Connecticut State League, which dates back as far as 1884. In 1891, the Connecticut State League included the Ansonia Cuban Giants, a team made up of entirely African-American ballplayers, including future Hall of Famers Frank Grant (baseball), Frank Grant and Sol White. In 1902, it was a Class D (baseball), Class D league with teams in eight cities. In 1905, the league became Class B (baseball), Class B, which lasted until 1913, when the league became the Eastern Association (minor league), Eastern Association due to several teams outside of the state entering the league. Bridgeport Crossmen
Several minor league baseball teams have played in Bridgeport, Connecticut from 1885 to the present day. The first professional team was the Bridgeport Giants who played in the Eastern League from 1885 through 1887. Bridgeport moved to the Connecticut State League in 1888 and became the Bridgeport Victors for the 1895 and 1896 seasons. They were nicknamed the Orators in 1898 to coincide with the nickname of the team's owner and manager, Baseball hall of famer Jim "The Orator" O'Rourke. In 1904, the team won a league record 71 games and went on to win the championship. Their home games were played at Newfield Park which was located on Newfield Ave. In 1913 they moved to the Eastern Association as the Bridgeport Crossmen and they moved again, to a new version of the Eastern League in 1916, where they would remain until the league folded in 1932. Troy Trojans (minor League Baseball)
The Troy Trojans, based in Troy, New York, were a minor league baseball team that existed on and off between 1885 and 1916. They first appeared in the Hudson River League in 1885 and 1886. After a year off they resurfaced in the International Association in 1888. They played in the Eastern Association in 1891, and in the Eastern League from 1892 to 1894, when they were replaced by the Scranton Indians. The minor league Providence Grays was the name of several minor league baseball teams between and . These teams were unconnected to the Major League Baseball Providence Grays. The first minor league Grays were members of the Eastern League in 1886, playing at the Messer Street Grounds. The team folded in June. A team known as the Providence Clamdiggers first played in the Eastern Association in , folding in August, and teams known as the Clamdiggers or Grays played in the Eastern League through . The Grays and Clamdiggers had been preceded in Providence by the Providence Rhode Islanders who played as members of the 1877 New England Association.
