East Village (band)
Formed in the mid-1980s by two brothers, Martin and Paul Kelly, East Village were an indie pop band from Princes Risborough, England. Their music drew heavily on the influence of 1960s guitar bands such as The Byrds, The Beatles, and Buffalo Springfield and like those groups East Village also featured three songwriters / lead vocalists. Though the bands output troubled only the lower reaches of the UK indie charts they have gone on to earn cult status since their break up in the early 1990s. History After a year or so as a garage band named Episode Four, the Kelly brothers were joined by Johnny Wood (guitar/vocals) in 1984 and Spencer Smith (drums) in 1985. During 1986 they recorded the ''Strike Up Matches'' EP released as a 500 only pressing on the Lenin and McCarthy imprint that year. Princes Risborough
Princes Risborough () is a market town in Buckinghamshire, England, about south of Aylesbury and north west of High Wycombe. It lies at the foot of the Chiltern Hills, at the north end of a gap or pass through the Chilterns, the south end of which is at West Wycombe. The A4010 road follows this route from West Wycombe through the town and then on to Aylesbury. Historically it was both a manor and an ecclesiastical parish, of the same extent as the manor, which comprised the present ecclesiastical parish of Princes Risborough (excluding Ilmer) and also the present ecclesiastical parish of Lacey Green, which became a separate parish in the 19th century. Bob Stanley (musician)
Bob Stanley (born Robert Andrew Shukman; 25 December 1964) is a British musician, journalist, author, and film producer. He is a member of the indie pop group Saint Etienne and has had a parallel career as a music journalist, writing for ''NME'', ''Melody Maker'', ''Mojo'', ''The Guardian'' and ''The Times'', as well as writing three books on music and football. He also has a career as a DJ and as a producer of record labels, and has collaborated on a series of films about London. His second publication, ''Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!: The Story of Modern Pop'', was published by Faber & Faber in 2013. His third publication ''Let's Do It: The Birth of Pop Music: A History'' was published by Pegasus in 2022. ''Finisterre'' is the sixth studio album by English alternative dance band Saint Etienne, released on 7 October 2002 by Mantra Records. A double-disc deluxe edition was released on 3 May 2010 by Heavenly Records. Background Following two relatively uniform albums, ''Good Humor'' and '' Sound of Water'', ''Finisterre'' contains a wide mixture of sounds and styles (as would its successor '' Tales from Turnpike House''). The album returned to the inclusion of vocal interludes between songs as last heard on their album '' So Tough'' and a more angular, electronic sound, particularly on tracks such as "Action", "Shower Scene" and "New Thing". "Language Lab" and "Summerisle" recall the ambient style of ''Sound of Water'', while "Stop and Think It Over" would not have been out of place on ''Good Humor'' or its predecessor, ''Tiger Bay''. Dolly Mixture were an English band, formed in 1978 by the bassist and vocalist Debsey Wykes (born 21 December 1960, Hammersmith, London, England), guitarist and vocalist Rachel Bor (born 16 May 1962, Wales), and drummer Hester Smith (born 28 October 1960, West Africa). They had a taste of top 40 success performing backing vocals for the Captain Sensible hit " Wot", a top 10 hit with Sensible on "Glad It's All Over", and a UK No. 1 hit backing Sensible on his 1982 cover of " Happy Talk". Rachel Bor also featured on the Animus/Loose Records single "Wot NO Meat?" also by Captain Sensible in 1985. Bor and Wykes performed together on 24 April 2013 at the Islington Assembly Hall in London. ''CD86: 48 Tracks from the Birth of Indie Pop'' is a compilation album of artists from the original ''C86'' era, released in 2006 by Sanctuary Records. It is compiled by Bob Stanley of Saint Etienne. To coincide with its release, the Institute of Contemporary Arts hosted "''C86'' - Still Doing It For Fun",ICA website, C86 - Still Doing It For Fun, October 2006, http://www.ica.org.uk/?lid=12257 an exhibition and two nights of gigs celebrating the rise of British independent music. Flowered Up
Flowered Up were an English indie pop- alternative dance band, formed in Camden Town, London in 1989, active during the Baggy movement. Their 13-minute single " Weekender" reached the UK top 20. The band split up in 1994 amid drug problems. Following a failed reformation attempt in 2007 and a solo record deal that fell through, frontman Liam Maher died from a heroin overdose in 2009, followed by his brother Joe also of a heroin overdose in 2012. Manic Street Preachers, also known simply as the Manics, are a Welsh Rock music, rock band formed in Blackwood, Caerphilly, Blackwood in 1986. McCarthy were a British indie pop band, formed in Barking, Greater London, England in 1984 by schoolmates Malcolm Eden (voice and guitar) and Tim Gane (lead guitar) with John Williamson (bass guitar) and Gary Baker (drums). Indie rock is a Music subgenre, subgenre of rock music that originated in the United States, United Kingdom and New Zealand from the 1970s to the 1980s. Originally used to describe independent record labels, the term became associated with the music they produced and was initially used interchangeably with alternative rock or "Pop rock, guitar pop rock".
