East St. Louis School District
East St. Louis School District 189 is a public school district headquartered in the city of East St. Louis, Illinois, United States. In addition to East St. Louis, the district also serves portions of Canteen, Centreville, and Stites Townships in northwestern St. Clair County. History The non-high school district 202, which included the elementary school districts 182 and 184, was dissolved in July 1956. The area from this district was divided between the East St. Louis school district and the Cahokia Unit School District 187, and therefore the East St. Louis district took students of all grade levels from the former 202 district. The East St. Louis district received around 66% of the students and around 66% of the District 182's assessed valuation. Centreville is a census-designated place (CDP) in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States and a suburb of Washington, D.C. The population was 73,518 as of the 2020 census. Centreville is approximately west of Washington, D.C. History Colonial period Beginning in the 1760s, the area was known as Newgate due to the popularity of the conveniently located Newgate tavern. William Carr Lane operated the tavern and was co-proprietor of a nearby store with James Lane, Jr. The Lanes sold convicted servants, which may explain why the tavern had the same name as a London prison.
